British Muslim Women

As British Muslim women we believe in the principles of democracy, human rights, peaceful co-existence and respect for life. These are being daily undermined by extremists and terrorists who murder, rape and steal in the name of Islam. We declare that groups like Islamic State, Al Qaeda and Boko Haram do not represent our faith and pose a very real and dangerous threat to our communities and to women’s rights and lives.

‘Making A Stand’

We launched this campaign in 2014 because we wanted to stop the damage caused by extremists poisoning young minds in our communities. As mothers we were losing our children as they turned their backs on us, choosing instead to join the murderous so-called Islamic state having been radicalised online by hate preachers pushing their messages of a false Islam.

Listening to women as they told us of their suffering and unimaginable grief on discovering that their sons and daughters had turned their backs on the family to join ISIS made us realise that if we came together our voice would be stronger.

We decided to make a stand to utterly and unequivocally reject the barbarism of the so-called Islamic state and to reject extremists and radicalisers such as Boko Haram and Al Shabaab.

We were determined to ensure that these terrorists would no longer be able to prey on our children with impunity.
Women now feel empowered to stand up and say: “No more. Enough is enough.” Building on the success of the campaign so far, we visited Birmingham, Luton, Cardiff, Leeds, Burnley, , Bristol, West and East London in order to spread the word.

We are thankful to the Home Office for supporting our Making A Stand campaign. The funding received to deliver projects into communities has helped provide women with an opportunity to better understand how they can protect their children from radicalisation and extremism.

‘Taking the Lead’

Women are the first defence against radicalisers in our communities.
So as women in our communities we will declare our abhorrence of extremism and take the lead in stopping radicalisers preying on our children and grooming them for violence.

‘Our Commitment’

Through #makingastand we commit ourselves to rejecting terrorism and violence practised in the name of Islam. Together we will:

• Challenge hatred and extremism wherever we find it.
  

• Exert influence in our Mosques and communities.
  

• Create local support networks and partner with statutory agencies.
  

• Equip our communities with counter-narratives and help families identify the signs of radicalisation.
  

• Spread the word with the use of the #makingastand campaign.

Saudi women need to be accompanied by a male guardian known as a 'mahram' whenever they leave the house. The guardian is often a male relative and will accompany women on all of their errands, including shopping trips and visits to the doctor.

Such practices are rooted in "conservative traditions and religious views that hold giving freedom of movement to women would make them vulnerable to sins," according to The Guardian.

In one extreme case, a teenager reported that she had been gang-raped, but because she was not with a mahram when it occurred, she was punished by the court. The victim was given more lashes than one of her alleged rapists received, the Washington Post reports.

The Saudi Arabian government recently announced that it was considering lifting restrictions on women that would allow them to travel without the approval of their relatives, but human rights groups warn the move is likely to be vetoed by senior clerics.

Drive a car

There is no official law that bans women from driving but deeply held religious beliefs prohibit it, with Saudi clerics arguing that female drivers "undermine social values".

In 2011, a group of Saudi women organised the "Women2Drive" campaign that encouraged women to disregard the laws and post images and videos of themselves driving on social media to raise awareness of the issue in an attempt to force change. It was not a major success.

Saudi journalist Talal Alharbi says women should be allowed to drive but only to take their children to school or a family member to hospital. "Women should accept simple things", he writes for Arab News. "This is a wise thing women could do at this stage. Being stubborn won't support their cause."

Wear clothes or make-up that "show off their beauty"

The dress code for women is governed by a strict interpretation of Islamic law and is enforced to varying degrees across the country. The majority of women are forced to wear an abaya – a long black cloak – and a head scarf. The face does not necessarily need to be covered, "much to the chagrin of some hardliners," says The Economist. But this does not stop the religious police from harassing women for exposing too much flesh or wearing too much makeup.

The dress code was extended to all female television presenters earlier this year. The king's advisory body, the Shoura Council, ruled that the women should wear "modest" clothes that do not "show off their beauty", according to Arab News.

Interact with men

Women are required to limit the amount of time spent with men they are not related to. The majority of public buildings including offices, banks and universities have separate entrances for men and women, the Daily Telegraph reports. Public transportation, parks, beaches and amusement parks are also segregated in most parts of the country. Unlawful mixing will lead to criminal charges being brought against both parties, but women typically face harsher punishment.

Go for a swim

Reuters correspondent Arlene Getz describes her experience of trying to use the gym and pool at an upmarket Riyadh hotel: "As a woman, I wasn't even allowed to look at them ('there are men in swimsuits there,' a hotel staffer told me with horror) — let alone use them."

Compete freely in sports

Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia proposed hosting an Olympic Games without women. "Our society can be very conservative," said Prince Fahad bin Jalawi al-Saud, a consultant to the Saudi Olympic Committee. "It has a hard time accepting that women can compete in sports."

When Saudi Arabia sent its female athletes to the London games for the first time, hard-line clerics denounced the women as "prostitutes". While they were allowed to compete, they had to be accompanied by a male guardian and wear a "Sharia-compliant" sports kit that covered their hair.

Try on clothes when shopping

"The mere thought of a disrobed woman behind a dressing-room door is apparently too much for men to handle," says Vanity Fair writer Maureen Dowd in 'A Girl's Guide to Saudi Arabia'.

Other more unusual restrictions include:

Entering a cemetery
Reading an uncensored fashion magazine
Buying a Barbie
However, explains Dowd, everything in Saudi Arabia "operates on a sliding scale, depending on who you are, whom you know, whom you ask, whom you're with, and where you are".

But things are slowly beginning to modernise in a country that has historically had some of the most repressive attitudes towards women.  "Women in Saudi Arabia are highly educated and qualified," says Rothna Begum from Human Right Watch. "They don’t want to be left in the dark."

I actually agree with Tommy on the subject of government funding of charities. I'd prefer to see governments helping people directly rather than channeling funding to charities, which just adds another layer of salaries and expenses and too often attaches financial aid to a religious agenda.

I'd like to see the same sentiment for charities to foreign nations.  We in the USA have just sent 250 more troops to fight ISIS.

I pay taxes for essential public services and the NHS etc... not for the govt/local councils to hand it away to their pet projects or other so called 'charities'...


And don't forget... most of the money gets used to pay the wages and running costs of each one... only a fraction actually gets through to actually helping anyone!!!



Here's an interesting little story... I go to a local good curry restaurant every now and then... last time I went there I noticed an extra little charge on the bill... it was only 25p and I wondered what it was so asked...

This is what I was told...


It is a small added amount to every bill to go towards funding a 'charity' that the restaurant had set up in order to go towards providing help for poor children in Bangladesh (and Brazil he also claimed) to provide school places etc...


I said that was a good thing to want to try to help... but I also thought that it was something that the respective govts should be already taking care of, not for me to be paying an extra bit for my already expensive Curry to pay for it... I also thought that they probably already get plenty of our money through our international aid budget etc...


But then he told me that the tiny amount was just to get the 'charity' up and running and getting regular contributions... BECAUSE THEN IT COULD GET A 2 STAR RATING AND THEN BE ABLE TO GET GOVT/COUNCIL FUNDING OF EVEN MORE TAXPAYERS CASH!!!

And let's not forget this...

So 18,000 of these 'kids' said they had seen someone stabbed or shot in that year in the small number of areas in London where this 'charity' operated...!!!



But the evening standard says the official figures show only about 4800 people suffer stab wounds in the whole of London in a year!!!

(And we know only a tiny number of people suffer gun shot wounds a year in london)

So either violent crime is hugely higher than being recorded and the police are lying... or the 'kids'/kids company were lying.....!?

I wouldn't deny these women one single penny of any tax funding money they receive to help engage with the Muslim community and the work they do in schools.

We keep hearing that the Muslim community must do more to help stop the extremism but it seems that whenever they do there are people who just can't help themselves from trying to pass them off as fakes just doing it for money or feeding the terrorists.

The funding for the entire counter extremism strategy is only £5 million and it doesn't just cover Islamic extremism it als covers anti semetism and extreme RW groups like neo nazi's.

I am glad to see that in the west Muslim women have the freedom of speech to speak up in support of democracy and human rights, so well done them.

We do live in a muzzzzzzzy country, the UK, you can tell by the ghettos and the way they dress and mosques everywhere, muzzzzzizin London stopping OUR traffic to allegedly pray.

I suppose my feeling is that they shouldn't have to do all that work. The onus is on the stupid and extremist Muslims to change, and the public shouldn't have to pay for them to do so.

Well stated and SPOT ON - something I've been reading a lot about on all our social media here in America ...where are the rational thinking/sane Muslims that don't have a voice?  And over here they could utilize the NPR {national public radio}= gov. funded.

They find their voice when it suits. They were out on the streets shouting quick enough for the Palestinians

Shame their march in Paris in support of the victims was stopped because of the ban on demonstrations.

Different Muslim countries are less radical than others. Take Turkey for instance, as compared to Saudi. So no, it's not utter rubbish, it's a very valid point. This country is extremely tolerant of other cultures and religions in a way many countries are not. These women would not to be allowed to do this in Pakistan or Saudi or Afghanistan, and probably many other Muslim countries.
