Playing musical instruments and taking up ping pong are two suggestions
Other tips include giving the brain an electric shock and going vegan
There are so many things that we don’t understand about getting older. Why is it we can recall the words of every Abba song — yet we can’t remember where we left the car keys?
And why, at the age of 71, are Angela Rippon’s legs still as fabulous as when she famously flashed them on the Morecambe and Wise show 40 years ago?
Well, an ambitious new BBC series, How To Stay Young, fronted by Angela and Dr Chris van Tulleken (who is, at 37, just over half her age) provides some fascinating food for thought.
The programme involves a global hunt for the latest anti-ageing thinking, and also sees the presenters undergo physical tests themselves, throwing up some potentially life-changing revelations on their own chances of reaching 100.
At the same time, it provides the rest of us with tips for how to stay younger for longer — from the weird and wacky to the ultra-practical.
VEGAN FOR A HEALTHY HEART
Bad news for all the carnivores, but a juicy steak should really be the first thing to go if you want to make it to 100, as meat-eaters are more likely to suffer heart disease.
Dr van Tulleken might be appalled to be served up a vegan feast when he visits the city of Loma Linda in California, but since it comes at the home of Dr Ellsworth Wareham, a centenarian who was performing heart surgery up until the age of 95, and who still holds a driving licence, he has to take the ensuing dietary advice seriously.
Loma Linda is a bona fide Mecca of longevity, one of only five so-called ‘blue zones’ in the world.
The blue zones got their name following the work of two demographers, who identified places where the locals are recognised for living notably longer lives than average and used blue circles to mark out these areas.
Scientists believe it’s because the city of Loma Linda also has the highest concentration of Seventh-Day Adventists in the U.S. — a religion that has strict lifestyle rules forbidding alcohol and meat. Could it be time to swap the steak and kidney pudding for some quinoa?

Thought I'd put this here as this is a programme that's using "science" and tests and "studies" all those things you lot chomp up like truth-candy, that has proven ways of staying young.

Snipped from a slightly more informative article:
4. Not eating meat is one secret to ageing well.
study on the population of the town of Loma Linda, California (where vegetarianism is very popular) found that for vegans overall mortality is reduced by a quarter compared to meat eaters and they’re half as likely to get heart disease.
We met 100-year-old Ellsworth Wareham who was a surgeon until the age of 95. He’s been a vegan for 50 years and lives in Loma Linda.
Apparently animal protein stimulates a hormone we all need for growth but as we get older, particularly in middle age, this same hormone speeds up ageing.
You might not have to become a full blown vegan to feel some benefit though, just cutting down the amount of meat we eat can help. And nuts – walnuts especially – can protect us from heart attacks.

If the Lord did not want us to eat meat,

ANYONE STUPID ENOUGH to follow health advice from an idiot know-nothing former journalist writing in an anti-science populist rag like the Daily Fail deserves the consequences...
BESIDES WHICH, the articles don't support the notion of "going Vegan" at all !
BUT RATHER, all that they do actually say -- IS THAT removing red meat from ones diet is good for you..
NOT the same thing at all...
JUST MORE anti-science lies being bandied about between a few nongs without a clue between them..

It's a TV series - did you read the OP?
And all the results were spoken about by scientist
All the tests were carried out by scientists
I guess though, these scientist, the ones that don't agree with your view, are crap, but all others that you quote, are okay?
Refer to my thread "who do you believe?"
My point is made time and again.

Well these Italians of which I have posted before are certainly not Vegans

PROPER scientists do proper empirical research, and replicate trials that go through peer review sytems and are reported in recognised peer reviewed journals and conferences...
THIRD RATE crap scientists report their unsubstantiated opinions on crap TV shows, in crappy gutter rag newspapers, and on anti-science crappola blogsites selling "homeopathic vaccines" and "naturopathic cures" on the side..
AND THEY make spurious and baseless links to "going vegan" when what thay actually mean is giving up eating red meat.
YOUR personal anti-scince bias and support for quackery and nonsense shines through in threads like like this, edds !

Wolfie, they did an MRI scan of her heart (she's a healthy, lean and fit 70 year old) and she had fat around her heart and internal organs.
They said this was caused by meat.
Aren't these the kind of scientists you believe in then?
I'm confused!

they just simplified it
one of the most common foods with saturated fat is meat but other things include butter(dairy), nuts, really any plant with oils can do the same. BUT people don't tend to eat solid chunks of plant fats so in the average diet the likely culprit is meat but more specifically low grade high fat content meat. I think the way you eat it will make a difference to if you are someone that chews up the grizzly fat on the steak well you are going to consume a higher amount of saturated fats than someone that cuts it off and gives it to the dog etc.
this is actually one of the issue with US fast food because they primarily use mince, they tend to use crazy low grade mince with very high fat content compared to proteins etc. (it is literally illegal to sell that grade as dog food here) so people are both obese and nutrient starved at the same time.
you will find in the details of these studies that lean grass fed meat is healthy, but once you go lower grade and have fast-fattened grain fed cattle it is not something you should be eating all the time.

WHAT veya said...
AND, Besides which--
MRI scans don't prove anything, eddie..That's not their function in life.
An MRI will show up the differences in density and temperature of the body it is imaging..
A radiographer/radiologist then interprets those readings and passes the results onto the doctor(s).
THE DIAGNOSTICIAN: whether a GP, specialist or m3dical researcher will then use that MRI scan as one of their diagnostic 'tools'.
IF the scan shows excessive fat around organs such as the heart, it simply means that the patient is probably consuming far too much fat..
IT DOESN'T tell the diagnostician where that fat originated...
IT WOULD BE irresponsible of any doctor or researcher to state that meat is the culprit, without delving further into the patients diet, history and overall health..
AND IT IS downright deceitful, mischievious and opportunistic on the part of "Vegan" bloggers, editors and producers to keep on making spurious, biased and unsupported false claims.
