Meet my new dog!

Meet Tiggy. A three and a half year old retired racing greyhound.
She's a little nervous and a bit of a foodie!

She's a brindle greyhound!!!!!   She's gorgeous (and asleep on her bed alsreay lol)   PS, I can see her head

Called her Tiggy as she is stripey like Tigger (according to my daughter lol)

Tiggy is a lovely name.  Brother had one called Mick and I could write a book about his escapades.  Started as he meant to carry on.  2nd day they had him, sister in law took him shopping, they had a little Citroen then.  Popped into the post office for 2 minutes, came back and he had eaten 1 lb block of cheese and 1/2 lb dry rice.  They had to pour glycerin down his throat on advice from the vet and leave him in the yard to pebbledash the walls lol

She really likes her food...she was fed her dinner after an hour or so of being st home to settle her. Thought she might be too stressed to eat but no, wolfed it down!

I'm worried about her just peeing anywhere though as I know they just pee etc in their kennels

If you can, take her into the garden every hour at the beginning, if she 'performs' praise her like mad, make a real fuss.  Put loads of paper down by doors, if she pees on it, put it outside the door where you want her to pee and take her to it.  Don't tell her off, just let her associate the smell with the outside.

It's a method I have always used and never had a dog have an accident after a week of that.

Yes I keep taking her to the garden but she doesn't want to go out there without me.
Just took her for a quick walk in the lead and she went thank god

Awwww, how wonderful is that '???' and a TIGGY, such a cute name!  
Here's an official adoption certificate you can print and fill out for your daughter to hang up or keep.



Not knowing what the repertation of the racing/breeder you adopted your brindle greyhound from --- I'll say that the 'Responsible Owner/Breeders' don't treat their racing stock in such a shameless way by leaving them cooped up in their kennels without proper potty breaks during the day.  Dogs will hold their bladder as long as possible to keep from voiding into their sleeping quarters. But the older the dog {around 10yrs} they won't be able to keep their bladder controlled longer then 4-6 hrs.
Bless you and your family for bringing this noble breed into your home and giving her a new lease on life as an addition to your family!

Eddie, if a cat is savaged by a dog even in your own garden it is deemed to be "not under control " and you will be prosecuted by the RSPCA. Greyhounds are prone to chase small animals and owners of these dogs must be aware of this.

Nicko! Two things:

One: I would NOT let a dog ever maul a cat in my garden!
Two: when I asked about Tiggy I made sure of a few things: she must like small animals and cats, she must like children (most GH do) and she must be laid back

If you have a look at most greyhound sites, they are one breed who can live very happily with a cat lol

Aww she is lovely.
I know someone with 3 greyhounds and they make the most adorable laid back pets, though one of them is nervous....just the way she is.

I think it's a massive change for them Syl. They come from that racing Kennel background and then to another kennel when they're retired then to a home with lots of new noises and smells

Wow...a greyhound.  We had two of them (Arizona has dog racing, so they abound there).  Get ready for some energetic activities.  They have waaaaay much energy.  They need to run, run, run...

But they are affectionate.  One of the best at loving children.

With all that activity, keep an eye on the internal organs.  Look out for signs of a distended stomach (stomach twisting around and shutting down).  Signs include lethargic sleeping, discomfort, pain...look it up:

Yep, dogs are sensitive about theses things. I'm sure with all the love and attention she will get bestowed onto her she will settle in quickly. x

but remember they do need a lot of walking My brother in law used to breed and race greyhounds back in the 70s i used to get paid to walk them i hated it to be honest ....but loved the dogs


Ps a little bit of a warning as well

1 make sure you have a really strong lead
2 be aware if she see`s a cat or rabbit there is a good chance she will bolt after it
And believe me the last thing you want is it to get hold of ether ......its not pretty...been there done that

I've took her out and she's seen some small dogs and not really even bothered looking tbh KD
She also has to be muzzled until we know for sure, that she won't chase a smaller animal.

My main problem at the moment is that she's screaming when I go upstairs (and she's never seen stairs so won't climb them)

Try putting treats up them.  It will definitely take a time, you are leader of the pack to her at the moment and she doesn't know what is going on.  Few weeks time and she'll be all settled in.

Lovely dog eddie. My grandad had a greyhound named Barney which he raced at Wallyford race track in Musselburgh and my dad helped him train it. The sport was really corrupt at the small tracks and if you were in the know you were told which dog hadn't had the meat pie just before the race started.

How did you manage to obtain a matching, burgundy doggie bed for her? Do you have a decorator??

Long story but my dog had to go back to the kennel.

She wasn't settling and seemed unwell (she had been spayed only 7 days prior and had had complications so was on antibiotics)
Any way, long story short, she seemed very happy to be cuddled etc and was a dream to walk on lead (not allowed off due to op) but was very very distressed at night and even when she was laying down with me in the room.
Took her to vets late yesterday and she needed more antibiotics and vet said she needed to go back to Kennels (he rang them and gave them an earful I think!)
Since transpired that the opinion at the kennels is that she is pretty institutionalised and actually likes the kennel and that she needs to be homed with another dog!?? The manager NEVER told me any of this!
Also they don't even socialise the dogs...?!

My other half was angry and told them to keep the donation we made (we were offered it back) but we wanted all the other monies back for leads, coat, blah
blah

They offered him another dog too! He said no thanks, I'll go somewhere else and not yet!

So we have a space where she was.
My daughter was a little sad but she's four and bounces back like, well, a four year old.

She asked me for a fluffy kitten.
Pfffffff.

Well, that is indeed disgusting for that kennel to do such heinous lack of disclosure but I'm not shocked...I know and used to volunteer at a local 'Recovery Sight' right here in this small rural area! Until I caught the owner 'LYING' to possible foster parents and rescue families about: the specific dogs temperament/the dogs age/the method of their peddle bad training and how well behaved that specific dog was around small children!!! I confronted her twice and then by the third time I realized it was all about the $200 per dog that she was getting paid to home/rescue that dog from a 'KILL SHELTER' rather then being honest about the dog to human best fit!!! I wrote up quite a 'BLOG' about her web page and sent it out to ALL OF THE REPUTABLE RESCUE SIGHTS and her business is/has dropped off drastically and other rescue organizations won't send her ANY dogs to be placed.

It's sad - shocking but you'll find the better fit and a far better placement facility --- you surely will.

Get her a kitten, don't be mean just cause you don't like 'em. cheaper than a dog, and you will grow to love it.

They need love.  I can't see her preferring the institution. Oh well, could be there was someone special back at the kennel.

Depending on the personality of that specific dog; acclimating from the habitual place that they've only known - to their new quieter/non confined home would take at least 2 - 4 weeks {or more depending on high stress situations} ie. vacuum cleaners/loud ruckus children/thunder storms etc., etc., etc. Some dogs just prefer to sleep in a closed in wire kennel with a blanket draped over it for security purposes --- it's all they've known and it's how they rest in solitude and complete comfort.

I thought exactly that quill - how can a dog prfer the kennel to a home?? But after having spoken to a real long timer of retired racers, he assured me this could be the case oftentimes.

Not sure I totally buy it, like you.

I'm more upset that she was homed when not fully well. She was so restless, even when laying down and she whimpered all the time.

We had a lovely walk though. She was a real pleasure to walk.
