Michigan shootings: At least seven dead in 'random murders' in Kalamazoo County
At least seven people have been killed in a series of "random" shootings around Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Five people were killed at a Cracker Barrel restaurant and two were killed outside a Kia car dealership.
A 14-year-old girl was among the five fatally shot at the restaurant, while a father and son were killed at the dealership.
Police were first called to an apartment complex where a woman was shot multiple times. She was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
A 45-year-old male has been taken into custody and is now being questioned by police.

He appears to be mentally disturbed. No prior criminal history. No domestic issues.
He appears to have simply lost it. Here's one that can be chalked up, simply, to availability of guns.

Yeah, it would take a constitutional amendment to ban all guns, and pulling that off is by design a very difficult thing to do:

New reporting shows the shooter drove for Uber and seems to have been triggered by a phone call while he was driving a passenger:

I'd love to know more about who was calling and what was said.
Kalamazoo, Michigan (CNN)The man accused of killing six people and injuring two more in a Saturday evening shooting rampage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was an Uber driver who picked up and dropped off passengers between shootings, a source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.
The source, who is not authorized to speak to media, said investigators believe Jason Brian Dalton was even looking for fares after the final shooting of a nearly seven-hour killing rampage.

CNN affiliate WWMT spoke to a man who says he was a passenger of Dalton's just before the shootings started.
"We got about a mile from my house, and he got a telephone call. After that call, he started driving erratically, running stop signs," Matt Mellen told the affiliate. "We were kind of driving through medians, driving through the lawn speeding along and then finally, once he came to a stop, I jumped out of the car and ran away."

I can see no causal connection between the incident and Uber.
The phone call is interesting. Mr. Mellen was interviewed and the clip appeared on Good Morning America, this morning (Monday). It is interesting because it appears that something seemed to 'trip' the guy in and around the time of that phone call.

It doesn't matter what you all say, I keep telling you, lots of violent acts are being committed by uber drivers over here. Google it for yourselves,

This looks like a pretty comprehensive list: http://www.whosdrivingyou.org/rideshare-incidents
The problem is, what if we compiled the headlines about taxi drivers committing crimes from 2014 onward; what would that look like? How would it compare to ridesharing?
There's not nearly enough data to make an objective comparison between the two, and any sense that ride-sharing is more dangerous than hiring a taxi is based solely on anecdotal evidence.

That's why is spoke of a "causal connection" and not, as you say Ben, "compiling headlines".
I would have to see some sort of actual causal hypothesis before I jump to conclusions based simply on statistical compilations.

Yeah, I think we can rest assured that Uber doesn't make people criminals The question is, are their background checks good enough? And the answer to that question is always, no, nobody's background checks are ever good enough because people from all walks of life get their backgrounds checked and go on to commit crimes.
The only thing you can do is try to minimize risk as much as possible, so it would again be important to know whether it's safer to ride in a taxi or a rideshare, and there just aren't any police departments (literally anywhere) that keep those kinds of stats.

Again, on Good Morning America they had Uber's security chief on.
It's textbook law the only thing Uber could have done wrong is wrongful hiring. They checked employment history and criminal records, but didn't fingerprint. Just about down the median path for an employer of that caliber.
