When a child did you have a gollywog?

Did any of your kids have a golliwog?

Would you let your kids have a Golliwog?

Do you see golliwogs in stores/shops?

Without Googulin, do you know the meaning of 'pollywog?

They were never popular in America, thankfully. Why anybody would embrace a toy that causes such deep offense to perfectly decent people is beyond me.

I suppose the British who love these things are a bit like the Southern redneck in America who tells "n((ger jokes" and flies the Confederate flag. In other words, nothing but ignorant trash.

Yes, and you have to be real trash to try and bring them up when you know what they stand for, real trash.

Did some reading on them and there were some political candidates (Tory of course) who resigned in shame after trying to use them to campaign against "political correctness." Why anybody would go out of their way to offend others is baffling to me.

A lot were about when I was a whippersnapper, not one person ever complained about them, pc aerosolz of latter yearz are the problem, making them a symbol to hate/
Bourton On The Water is a luvlee tourist attraction here and they sell loadz.
The was one motorbike geeza with one tied to the back of hiz bike, now their are loadz, they look happy.

I had one when i was a kid...I loved it...it went everywhere with me....I still get all "soft daft" thinking about it...

it didnt turn me into a slave owning racist....in fact as a kid I wouldnt even have known what that meant....

and for some reason it didnt stop me leading the whole school out on a student strike at age 15 when a foul (eastern european) teacher racially abused one of the half dozen black kids we had on the roll....

Its not so much the doll itself but the name Golliwog, as it was so often used offensively against black people that the doll then became a symbol of racism towards black people
So because of racist idiots the term itself changed the doll also, but then some here cannot comprehend the harm cause by the abuse black people suffered because of such a word

So it was because of racists themselves that rendered the doll to become a symbol of racial hatred

I would say that some people collect gollies for nostalgic reason - if they had one as a child maybe, or if they like vintage toys. As I said, I do see them sometimes in second-hand shops. Ebay said they were banning gollies, but they don't appear to have done so.

I agree 100%.
I had a golly and I loved him when I was a kid, I never associated him with black people, he was just a soft cuddly doll with colourful clothes.
I personally would not buy one today because the image has become offensive to some. It's been used by a minority to demean black people and unfortunately that is what the gollywog now represents.

In the news recently.. Barbie has expanded, not only is shape and size either. There are now Barbie dolls to suit different body types and ethnicity.
