Re: Supermarkets Robbing Us
That seems expensive. I just bought some for £1.75....a smallish bag but plenty for 4 people, don't need peeling either.
Special offer was 2 bags for £3, or mix and match them with selected veg.

Farm Foods - 5 kilo back Maris Piper £2.75. You have to wash them though.

They're not conning anyone if the price is clearly displayed. No one is forced to pick up anything at the supermarket and buy it.

Re: Supermarkets Robbing Us
They've nearly doubled here. But OMG, everything is going up at our market.
Safeway Stores was just bought out by a slightly more expensive Albertsons Stores...and you are beginning to see the prices adjust. Also the sales are much more modest.

Our food costs have definitely been going up, but milk and eggs are pretty stable. It's meat that costs so much.

Oh, I know. That's a different conversation.
But food is going up astronomically. It used to be justified by rising transportation costs. But now, when fuel is really low, we don't see any drop in food prices.

You buy them from a farm. By the sack. Much cheaper.Stormee wrote:Bought some loose spuds yesterday, they had the colour of Cyprus spuds but unsure.
16 potatoes for £3.36, each spud was about double the size of a big egg, had to be peeledwe bought them cus they looked good, incidentally they were just spuds.
It worked out at 21 pence each potato, did not look at the weight.
Spuds are one of supermarkets biggest cons, unless you know better.

They would have gone rotten well before you could use the 25kg bagz up.
Stored in a cool dark place, they don't go rotten because they haven't been washed, how do you think people used to manage? If my OH sees a farm selling spuds when he is on the road working and he knows we are running low, he always gets one. It goes in the shed, and even though there are only two of us for most meals, it's fine.

If you don't like the price in one go to another

I like the coralle baked beans...
not as sweet as many of the "big brands" and there are actually a reasonable amount of beans in the tin, unlike teh big brands which have far too much "sauce" and too few beans...
beans on toast, with a strong cheddar grated over...yum
but ohh do I pay for it........
pass the gaviscon...........

You can purchase them in 10lb sacks. Besides, they keep very well in a cold dark place. How old do you think your supermarket spuds are, Stormee? Over a year old usually. At least farm spuds are fresh out of the ground.

I shop at Aldi sometimes....it's great value.
Farm shops and markets are good for fruit and veg. I think if we wanted to halve our food shopping bill we could if we shopped around.

I agree with storm here actually. I have a "potato bag" and it's stored in a cold dark cupboard but the potatoes still sprout within a couple of weeks.
