Wife could be jailed for not doing enough housework
A woman from Italy could be jailed for up to six years because she does not do enough housework, according to Italian media.
The 40-year-old, from Sonnino in the Lazio region, is being taken to court by her husband. He claims that her management of household chores is of a low standard and it has led to the “mistreatment of the family”, according to a translation of Ill Fatto Quotidiano by The Local. The husband also reportedly said he had been “forced to live in conditions with poor hygiene” and that his wife rarely cooked. The so-called negligence had taken place for two years. The trial of the woman is expected to take place in October. If convicted, she could be imprisoned for between two and six years. In March 2014, campaigners in Italy called for women who worked in the home, and their male counterparts, to be paid a salary in an effort to improve equality and tackle domestic abuse.
However, the proposal was not widely supported. Daniela Del Boca, an economics professor at the University of Turin told The Guardian the salary would act as a “disincentive to look for a job”.

If she goes to prison, she'll be doing even less housework and he'll have to employ a home help.

It sounds like one of those stories that newspapers publish the day after March 31st.

Re: Wife could be jailed for not doing enough housework
When I first opened the thread I was outraged that a woman could be jailed for not doing enough around the house!
Then I began thinking about this from the man's PoV: he works and provides money for his family and she is just sitting around doing nothing??
He must've put up with this for ages and tried to negotiate before coming up with this drastic step.

So. Anyone agree with this? If a man / woman works all day and the partner doesn’t, shouldn’t the stay-at-home person keep the house tidy and basically run the domestic ship?

I totally agree. For a lot of people these days, it doesn't split up quite so clearly cut, since in a lot of couples, both people work as well. But yes - responsibilities for running the household should be divided evenly. If one person's slacking off, it's just going to cause resentment.

I agree provided someone who's partner works but keeps the household short of money to live a reasonable life can be taken to court as well.
There's the issue of is she ill, depression and thyroid issues can cause you to be listless and seem lazy, has she been seen by a doctor I wonder.

Re: Wife could be jailed for not doing enough housework
Of course the woman should pull her weight if she isnt working and her partner is....marriage is a partnership, if one does sod all whilst the other is working hard resentment will set in before too long.
I was a stay at home mum till my son was 11, my OH took the bins out, mowed the grass, and that was about it. I cooked, cleaned, and did everything it takes to maintain a nice home for the three of us.
Cant be doing with womens liberation when it comes to matters like this, if you want to be liberated work out of the house full time and bring in a decent wage so you can afford to pay someone else to do the household chore.
