The violence against King's College London's Israel Society shows universities need to punish those who seek to hijack civilised debate
At this time of year, sixth formers who have applied to university may be waiting to hear if they've received an offer from their chosen institution. Many are excited by the prospect of making the move. New experiences, broader horizons, an opportunity to elevate study onto a mature and deeper level. Oh yes, and freedom from being nagged about leaving the fridge door open or their room so untidy that any self-respecting burglar would baulk at the mess. But it's hard as a parent to share such excitement when the stream of news flowing from our nation's campuses no longer suggests that university is a dawdling idyll between school and real life.

Instead, many campuses have provided a forum for excessive protest and violent activity – while little seems to be done by the relevant authorities to reclaim universities as a place for free speech to blossom and the peaceful exchange of ideas to flourish. Only this week police were called to King's College, London (KCL) after activists burst into an address by Ami Ayalon, the former head of the Israeli secret service and commander-in-chief of the navy, who is now a peace activist. The event, jointly organised by Israel societies at KCL and the London School of Economics (LSE), was under way when campaigners – believed to be from KCL Action Palestine – burst in.

Eyewitnesses described seeing the mob throw chairs, smash windows and set off fire alarms before the building was shut down by police.
The university says it is looking into the incident. Meanwhile a spokesman for Kings says its chancellor will also be writing to students to remind them that violent protest is totally unacceptable, and that "we expect them to be tolerant and respectful of others' views and opinions". Well, that should do it then. Nothing like a letter on a bit of headed notepaper to stop a violent hoodlum, gunning for action, from sticking his fist through a window. Should we be surprised? Not when universities seem to be unwilling or unable to do anything to halt the rise of intimidation and the suppression of free speech on campus. For the Kings protest is merely the latest in a series of worrying and oppressive incidents being instigated by hardline students across the country.

This the growing problem today where I see those on the extreme left and Muslim partners are no better than the EDL or Britain's First.

I mean imagine if the EDL had done this to a meeting on and Iraqi or Iranian conference?
We would have not heard the end of it and rightly so because all such hateful acts should be condemned
But this the problem, so call peace activists for the Palestinian cause are nothing of the sort, they are nothing but violent antisemitic thugs, who do not champion any peace and back a one state solution which would see Israel cease to exist and people wonder why more people are turning to the right?

The problem with these regressive lefties is they think they are champions against those of hate, by being hateful themselves, thinking their hate is justified.

Its not and its time people woke up to this hate filled lefties that stain our society, as much as we condemn the far right people need to show stand up against their hate and violence

You want to protest, then do so in a civilized manner, as if you end up being violent and hateful, you have just made a mockery of your cause.
