If it is a lie, it doesn't surprise me, but it's not going to change. Without taxes the USA, like any other country, would go down the plughole.

Is it true that people in England did not pay tax until the Government started it to pay for the War of American independence?

Quacks have been claiming this for a long time, but no court has ever ruled that the 16th amendment prohibits income tax.

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

That's the whole amendment, and it's perfectly clear.

not quite..

Normal Citizens didn't pay a federal tax,
it used to be local taxes (once upon a time to the local lords etc)
that paid a share to the Federal governance (or king if you go back far enough)
It was the first time the Federal governance had directly taxed the people.

it doesn't really matter because of the Precedents anyway.
the words are not important it is how previous judges have interpreted them and they have always officially interpreted them to mean the gov't CAN apply incomes taxes.

Just to go into it a bit more -- if every U.S. law had to define every word it used, every law would have to include a comprehensive dictionary of the English language. We have a legal concept in the U.S. that basically equates to, what would a reasonable person interpret as the meaning of these terms?

Everybody knows what income is. The U.S. government doesn't have to define commonly understood terms in order to uphold its laws.

And If it does become disputed it goes to the courts, and they set a precedent on the interpretation of the law.
Lower courts are bound by the Precedents of higher courts.
and thus the Practical definition of the laws does end up being defined

it is actually the same here and the UK Wink

it works, cause you only have to define what people dispute the meaning of Rolling Eyes
