Sutton Trust Report: White Working Class Boys From Poor Neighbourhoods Have 'Double Disadvantage'
First topic message reminder :
Almost a third of white working class boys from poor neighbourhoods stay in education after their GCSEs, thanks to a "double disadvantage", a report has found. Just 29% of this group continue to study after taking their exams, due to a combination of low family income and geographic poverty, the Background to Success report found. This compares to nearly half of white working class boys living in more affluent areas, and more than two thirds of male teens from more advantaged families, the report published by the Sutton Trust revealed.
The research showed different background factors, such as neighbourhood, family income, and ethnicity, combined to reduce teenagers' chances of entering further education.
The report, conducted by Oxford University, found boys are "significantly" less likely to carry on with academic study than girls. Two thirds of girls take AS, A-levels or another qualification compared with 55% of all boys. The attainment gap between poorer girls and their richer peers is also slightly less marked for females; more than half of disadvantaged girls go on to further study compared with three-quarters of the non-disadvantaged group.
The Sutton Trust urged the government to consider the "double disadvantage" of young men ahead of George Osborne's spending review later this month. "[The report] lays bare the powerful influence of different aspects of a student's background in shaping their educational outcomes," the Trust said. "It illustrates how such factors combine to reduce a pupil's chance of entering further education. "The Trust would like to see.. continued support for the pupil premium for all disadvantaged pupils, including high achieving disadvantaged pupils."

Is that right Victor:
State school students 'get better degrees' than private school pupils with same A-levels
Figures show 82% state school students went on to get firsts or 2:1s
Students who attended state schools are more likely to get top degree passes than former independent school pupils with the same A-level grades, new research shows.
The figures, based on the degree results of all students who graduated in 2013/14, show that 82 per cent of state school pupils got firsts or upper seconds compared with just 73 per cent of those from independent schools.
State school students who scored two Bs and a C at A-level did on average eight per cent better at degree level than their privately educated counterparts.
Sir Peter Lampl, chairman of the Sutton Trust - the charity which campaigns for equal access to education, said the research backed up calls for more to be done to ensure state school students - particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds - were properly represented at university.
“The fact that they are more likely to get a better degree than their private school peers shows how important it is to improve access to help able young people fulfil their potential,” he added.
Professor Alan Smithers, director of the Centre for Education and Employment at Buckingham University, said the gap could be down to independent schools stretching their pupils more and getting the best out of them before they went to university. Conversely, some state school pupils are not pushed to their full potential until degree level.
In addition, private school pupils may slow down at university because they are more confident about securing a job whatever their degree score.
Professor Smithers said: “Independent school pupils tend to go on to better jobs and may be more relaxed about going to university. They may know they can get an offer of a place in chambers or in the family firm when they leave university.”
The study also prompted concern that white graduates did much better than those from black or ethnic minority backgrounds - with 76 per cent obtaining a first or upper second degree compared to just 60 per cent of those from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Re: Sutton Trust Report: White Working Class Boys From Poor Neighbourhoods Have 'Double Disadvantage'
that is irelevant
ask any uni and they will tell you they now spend the first year "bringing students up to speed"
as their A level knowlege is worse than it was when I did mine...especially they have problems with "lack of knowlege "surrounding " a subject.....
nowadays university course start from a "lower level" than they did years ago.....

Lord Victor, I bet you go on about 'when I was a lad all we had was a brown paper bag to live in, and that was just Sundays' !!!!!!
I've seen what the kids do, and some of the stuff in junior school we would be doing in senior. I actually think schools are better and doing things we could only dream about.

LOL
old grumpy in now suggesting his generation had a better education
Sorry
BUT everything since your generation came to power has PROVEN otherwise.
Notice the gap in innovation that between the Nazi scientists and the Gen Y tech natives... that would be YOUR generation

Re: Sutton Trust Report: White Working Class Boys From Poor Neighbourhoods Have 'Double Disadvantage'
you mean like when supposedly intelligent kids cant do simple addition/subtraction in their heads...like change from a pound coin?
like when supposed A level chemistry students cant do simple "chemical equations" in their heads, without a book ...becasue the dont know their "valency tables"
the first I have personally experienced...
the second was a college tutor having a rant in the pub....
amazing stuf...like what? "playing with new technology" instead of learning the basics?

oh you mean the generation that gave YOU FM radio and indirectly DAB radio
that produced the first heart transplant
that innovated many drugs
that moved from the thermionic valve to the silicon chip
that actually made computers (albeit simple initially) that anyone could have
the engineers that produce GPS,
the geneticists that cracked the genomes
the medics that managed IVF
get your head out of your ass

On that I'll agree.

Re: Sutton Trust Report: White Working Class Boys From Poor Neighbourhoods Have 'Double Disadvantage'
And YES we did...we learned a lot about somethings ...THEN learned a bit about a lot as well....
moreover becasue of the "single exam system" we also learned to retain knowlege that we "read" or "heard"
unlike todays "open book" systems and continuous assesment,
we HAD to learn and I MEAN learn it fully totally and completely....
becasue we KNEW at the end of the year at least ONE of the questions would be about some obscure snippet of information we had been given right at the beginning of the year....(examiners were evil)
and you know what Veya....45 years on i can still recall over 90% of what I learned at school instantly....

Exactly victor, nothing..
ohh a slightly different wave length but still just analog radio So no really an invention just laying an extra lane
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Genome_Project
Genetics? we had to wait until Gen X entered the research facilities, no one did anything by say 'we should look at that' until 1990
first transplant success were in the 1910's, so just refining the work of previous generations at snails pace compared to today.
GPS is Nazi's all satellite rocket tech is just the culmination of their work.
and the silicone chip was invented while baby boomers were still children
You can recall 90% of what you learned in school but what does that even mean victor? I can Recall 1000% more than what was taught in school... because school taught me how to learn not to remember lists outdated the day after printing.

1956: Silicon Comes to Silicon Valley
Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory develops Northern California's first prototype silicon devices while training young engineers and scientists for the future Silicon Valley.

Even if that were the case, you're talking about punishing the children for the actions of their parents. We need to be working to raise the standards of education for all children, not scapegoat their parents and make the kids suffer for being born into the wrong families.
No, I'm saying that having money doesn't necessarily give children an advantage when it comes to education.

We all know that which we know.
Why do you think that is? Is there more discipline? Are the teachers better? Is it because they're not distracted so much?
