Ex-PM Abbott Brings shame and Embarrassment to everything

FORMER prime minister Tony Abbott has been accused of “embarrassing Australia” at prestigious gathering in London, where he urged European nations to turn back refugees fleeing the war torn Middle East.
Delivering the Margaret Thatcher lecture in London on Tuesday night, Mr Abbott warned of the “catastrophic error” Europe was making in its readiness to take in refugees from war-torn countries, offering his government’s tough boat-stopping strategy as an experience that “should be studied”.
Though the conservative crowd cheered the deposed leader, Abbott’s online audience hasn’t been so kind.
Greens Senator and asylum seeker advocate Sarah Hansen-Young was one of the first to distance herself from our former PM advocating anti-immigration message abroad.
“Tony Abbott still making a fool of himself and embarrassing Australia,” she wrote on Twitter.
“His obsession with pushing people in need away is beyond belief.”

Mr Abbott’s uncharacteristic departure from his Christian values — namely, his criticism of other Western countries’ “love thy neighbour” approach to welcoming asylum seekers — has a;sp apparently angered Catholic priests.
A former Bishop told Fairfax he was astounded and appalled by Abbott’s use of Bible passages to preach such a “hard-hearted” approach to refugees.
“I’m ashamed that a former Australian PM would be putting out a message like this,” retired Bishop Pat Power said.
“People will make their own judgments but that’s completely at odds with what’s at the heart of Christianity. I’m certainly offended.”
In the interest of balance, news.com.au searched for, but struggled to find, praise of Mr Abbott’s speech in social media comments.
There was one positive comment from Melbourne-based Briton Antonia Mocham: “Only good thing about the Abbott speech is that no-one in Europe seems to have noticed it happened.”

It goes over my head now sonny jim, I think your just jealous of our illustrious history. Never mind, I can live with it.
Your "illustrious history" is over, partner. It exists in books, not on the streets. Britain is doing just fine, but it's because of what is happening today, not the past.
We all can luxuriate in British history, just as we can in Russian history. All we have to do is read G. M. Trevelyan, or Nicholas V. Riasanovsky. History belongs to everyone.
Anything else you got?
Yeah I've got something else.......We've got too many immigrants in the country & our infrastructure cannot cope.
It's a plain fact no matter how many times you try to avoid it.

Yeah, but is that really true, or is that what right-wingers have been feeding you, which you accept unquestioningly because it agrees with your "I hate immigrants" attitude?

Re: Ex-PM Abbott Brings shame and Embarrassment to everything
The simple answer is not to build more... with the huge associated costs and other considerations, energy provision, waste management, food and water security, infrastructure, pollution, social impact etc etc... simple answer is reduce numbers allowed entry and only allow manageable amounts and then only after proper checks and required skills criteria are met.
Same as Australia and Canada etc...
Not too much to ask for the greater good of the country and people, is it...?

@tm
it is wishing for unicorns no wonder i think you lot have weird ideas. you think that wanting impossibility unreasonable is 'not too much to ask'.
This is not meant to sound anti british but i am sure some will take it that way
It is not about what you want it is about what is needed, You even said you don't have enough infrastructure it is struggling, therefore you need more. feelings/ideals/whatever wont magic it into existence you need to build more, really stopping in not an option due to globalized capitalism, even slowing down is hugely detrimental and unfortunately for you the example that other English speaking nations give is the UK
we can all see you sat down and everyone else started moving past... so we haven't sat down.. it is literally like Aesop's fable about the rabbit and the hare, you had a lead then decide to stop for tea or something and now are behind. unlike the fable however the turtles are also hares so catching up might not be easy.

yeah people tried that when Anglos and Spainards were the ones that needed new homes.
And Romans said the same thing to the peoples that currently inhabit Europe
In fact so did the Celts when Anglos arrived in Britain
Like i said "wishing for unicorns..."
why do you expect it to be different than the past few thousand years of human migration?
like i said it really is not about 'want' at least not about what you want now
it is about what you want in the future and building the infrastructure to attain it... So maybe you want the UK to go down the insular road like North Korea .. but that would be pretty silly considering the obvious comparison to the South Korea.
but hey if that is what you want you can build the infrastructure to attain it.... of course it would probably be cheaper just to build more schools and hospitals
