Knight Rider heroics of Pride of Britain winner praised by David Hasselhoff
Dee Patel was given an Outstanding Bravery award for stopping a runaway car, with Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden..David Hasselhoff paid tribute to a real life Knight Rider who prevented a high speed crash by stopping a runaway car on a motorway.
Dee Patel, 49, earned an Outstanding Bravery gong at the Pride of Britain Awards , sponsored by LIDL, for his actions which almost certainly saved lives.
Dee was presented with his award by former Baywatch and Knight Rider star Hasselhoff, plus Britain's Got Talent judges Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden. "I've always wanted to meet the real Knight Rider," Hasselhoff joked on stage. "I'm glad I did it because I did save somebody's life," Dee said when he received his award. "On that day I didn't even think about it," he added. "I went back to work in the van. I just carried on with my deliveries. Work comes first."
The Hoff said afterwards: "What Dee did was incredible, it just takes my breath away.
"These awards are incredible because they recognise such brilliance. "I've had some trouble with my knee and it's been tough but when I think of what these people have been through, it humbles me." Deliveryman Dee was in Monday morning rush-hour traffic on the busy M25 when he saw a car ahead of him veer dangerously out of control, smashing into the central reservation and bouncing off the barrier.
The car hit the barrier a second time, before swerving across four lanes of traffic and on to the hard shoulder. Dee, from East Farleigh, Kent, realised the driver, a young woman, was unconscious and a high-speed pile-up seemed inevitable. Putting his own safety to one side, Dee caught up with the runaway car, pulled alongside it and pushed it into the crash barrier where it ground to a halt. A Thames Valley policeman later praised his courage, saying: “Instead of a multi-vehicle collision with potential serious injuries, it has ended up with no injuries and just damage to vehicles which can be repaired or replaced thanks to your quick thinking.”

LONDON: A British-Indian delivery van driver has been named the recipient of this year's 'Pride of Britain Award' for risking his life to prevent a road accident that could have resulted in multiple fatalities, a media report said. Dee Patel, being hailed a "hero", will receive the award in the outstanding bravery category in a glittering ceremony at the Grosvenor House in London's Park Lane on Monday night, the Mirror reported. Patel, who works for Camberley town-based ventilation specialists Zehnder Group UK, was on a routine job on May 18 when he spotted a car ahead of him lose control on the M25 motorway.
