David Cameron caught on microphone saying people from Yorkshire 'all hate each other'
The Prime Minister was preparing to make a speech in Leeds - but forgot his microphone was switched on
David Cameron has been caught joking that people from Yorkshire "all hate each other" in an off-guard moment while on a visit to Leeds.
The Prime Minister made the embarrassing gaffe while preparing to make a speech - but forgot to check if his microphone was on.
He was recorded by the BBC saying: "We just thought people in Yorkshire hated everyone else, we didn't realise they all hated each other."
Cameron spent the afternoon chillaxing at the One-Day International at Headingley
And he put in an appearance on the BBC's Test Match Special, where he said the remarks were a joke about Yorkshire councils having trouble agreeing a deal for devolution.
He said: “I was picked up saying something which was not meant to be broadcast but it was a joke.
“One of my aides had said to me that there were about five or six different bids from Yorkshire for devolution.
“I joked saying that Yorkshiremen had it in for everyone else and not for each other or words to that effect which was a total joke, but it’s been picked up and I suspect I will be getting a bit of gyp from this."
He also claimed to have been forgiven for the unfortunate remarks by two of the greatest living Yorkshiremen.
He added: “I repeated what I had said to Dickie Bird and Geoffrey Boycott and they said, ‘it’s a joke, it’s a joke, that’s absolutely fine.’
“They laughed so I think absolution from those two Yorkshiremen. I hope that will be enough to see me through.
“I think people have a sense of humour and they can tell when you’re telling a joke even if it’s not a particularly good one.”
But Sheffield MP Harry Harpham said the comments "go to show how out of touch the Prime Minister is."
He added: "Yorkshire people are the salt of the Earth. It's God's own country.
"Yorkshire people will be appalled and disgusted when they hear this, and he should be thoroughly ashamed of himself."
And Stewart Arnold, Deputy Leader of Yorkshire First - a regional political party - said: "He's just shows complete and utter disdain. The disdain of a man who has no mandate from the people of yorkshire.
"At best it's stupid, and at worst it's an unnecessary insult."
The incident echoes a scene in the comedy film Naked Gun in which Frank Drebin (played by Leslie Nielsen) forgets his microphone is on after a speech and is caught short back stage.
The gaffe will also remind many of Gordon Brown's Gillian Duffy moment
Ahead of the 2010 election, he was caught with a hot mic driving away from a meet and greet in Rochdale.
He described Duffy - whom he'd bumped into and had concerns about immigration - as a "bigoted woman" - an error which haunted him for the rest of the campaign.

I doubt that will be forgotten.

Hmmm he's allowed to be human and it wasn't exactly a terrible or even a halfway terrible thing to say.

More reasons why we need a united kingdom govt making the decisions for all with representatives from all parts of UK collectively involved in doing this.
All this devolution talk is just further breaking up the UK into EU controlled regions.
I am against this.

He represents the people of Britain so he should control his thoughts , not only that but what if he had said it about the Scots or whoever. It is still offensive .

Yes vod, but we voted for a human, not a robot.
The only problem will,be when or if, he starts grovelling and apologising for it.
Then I'll think he's a twat.

I never voted for him lol , but usually when people make mistakes like this it is what's really in their thoughts .

Agreed eds, it was a joke, and pretty funny too. Nothing earth shaking, nothing offensive. Something out of nothing.

I'm a proud Yorkshireman (a Barnsley-born Tyke, an' tha' dun't get much more Yorkshire than that...) and I'm not in the slightest "offended" largely because, I suspect, I am not one of those people who scour the newspapers and airwaves searching (and hoping) for something to be "offended" about.
Cameron - apart from being, IMHO, a prat - is a politician, and politicians are naturally prone to gaffes because everything they say and do is recorded, noted, snooped on and scrutinised in the minutest detail, often by institutions or individuals who are desperate to find something to use against them.
We all say things, in both private and in public, that later we would rather were not entered into the public domain, simply because our opinions are not necessarily in agreement with those of others and we prefer harmony to acrimony...well, most of the time. In fact it would be a bloody sad day if that were not case.
Anyway, Call-Me-Dave appears to have been granted absolution by my fellow Tyke Dickie Bird...and that's good enough for me.

Was only a silly joke, very minor, and nothing compared to what brown said about the 'bigoted woman' for daring to raise a legitimate question about too high immigration here.

But the lessen he needs to learn now is to keep his big gob shut until he is certain the mic is switched off .

I'm sure those pretending this didn't matter, a Prime Minister being completely disdainful about a large number of the electorate, would have been saying quite the opposite if it wasn't a Tory saying it.

Re: David Cameron caught on microphone saying people from Yorkshire 'all hate each other'
What we need in this country is a strong UK govt that decides the national agenda through the elected representatives from every part of the UK who are in turn all voicing the views of their local electorate, not following any alternative agenda set elsewhere, and Then all of this being actively pursued and implemented throughout the nation by the local councils etc...
Then everyone gets the same etc and stop the bitching.
