Spanish heatwave claims ANOTHER victim, aged 36, as temperatures soar to blistering 41C

A 36-year-old cyclist has become the latest victim of the extreme heat in Spain which has put more than 20 provinces on red alert.

Health chiefs have warned of the dangers of the soaring temperatures which could have played a major part in the death of Cilla Black at her luxury villa in Marbella .

The male cyclist was rushed to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía in Malaga after he fell of his bike and was found convulsing on the road.

Medics treated him at the scene for signs of dehydration and a high body temperature of more than 40 degrees, two of the main symptoms of heat exhaustion.

However, he never regained consciousness and died in the emergency room.

Doctors confirmed his death was due to heatstroke.

The man, who was Spanish, had been riding his sports bike through Malaga at about noon when the tragedy occurred.

A few days earlier, 24-year-old girl walking along the newly opened Caminito de Rey was also taken to hospital with heatstroke but recovered.

The cyclist's death was Malaga's first fatality directly related to the heat which made July the hottest month in the province since records began.

Elsewhere the weather is said to have claimed at least four lives including workmen, a 62-year-old Spanish man and a 47-year-old Romanian tourist.

Twenty Spanish provinces including Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca are currently on alert as the weather soared today to 41 degrees.

The Spanish Government has released guidelines which advise people not to go out in the sun between noon and 5pm, to drink lots of water, not to take physical exercise during the extreme heat and to take extra special care with children and the elderly who are the most vulnerable.
