An amazing story of courage, bravery and total sacrifice.
Kevin Arthur Wheatley, VC (13 March 1937 – 13 November 1965) was an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Wheatley was one of four Australians to receive the award for actions during the Vietnam War. Born in Surry Hills, Sydney, the third child of Raymond and Ivy (née Newman) Wheatley, both natives of Sydney, Kevin Wheatley was educated at Maroubra Junction Junior Technical School. Upon completing his schooling, Wheatley worked as a labourer in Sydney. On 20 July 1954, he married Edna Davis; together they would have four children. He was a keen rugby player, and he earned the nickname of “Dasher” on the field

Military service
Wheatley enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on 12 June 1956 and joined 4 Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR), following training, later that year. In March 1957 he transferred to 3RAR where he saw active service in Malaya from September 1957 to July 1959. In August 1959 he transferred to 2RAR and in mid 1961 to 1RAR. He was promoted to Sergeant in January 1964 and in August to Warrant Officer Class II. Wheatley was posted to the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV), in Vietnam on 16 March 1965. For his first six months in country he was attached to a regular unit of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) unit in Quang Tri province.

Did Mr Swanton get a medal as well? He picked up a wounded soldier and tried to carry him to safety. If he hadn't done that, he might not have been shot himself. It doesn't say what happened to the other wounded soldier.

It must be very difficult to decide who gets a medal and who does not. Just facing the enemy at all is an act of bravery isn't it?
