They haven't played yet.
Good luck to the girls particularly Fara Williams. She is an inspiration to all young people in what they can achieve and she does so much work to help them get there.
She is a star and on the brink of becoming England's most capped England player.
C'mon girls - you can do it.

Re: England vs Japan; women's World Cup
What happened?????
Oh. I see.
England’s World Cup dream concluded in the cruellest fashion when Laura Bassett’s stoppage time own goal re-routed Mark Sampson’s Lionesses from the final in Vancouver to Heathrow.
Bassett was in tears after slicing an intended clearance into her own net at the end of an evening on which England had held their own against a slick passing, technically accomplished, but largely non-penetrative, Japan side.
Defensively excellent, Sampson’s players persistently forced their opponents to construct their passing triangles down a series of cul-de-sacs and blind alleys. Perhaps ironically, they came undone when the geometry-obsessed World Cup holders delivered a rare cross.
FFS!

Re: England vs Japan; women's World Cup
England lost by an 'own goal'. Don't see that often.
It's now down to Japan v. US. I am boycotting because of the game's position on domestic violence...they permit it when every other sport takes a stand.

It was tragic moment for the young girl and her clearance could have gonr anywhere other that the one part of the goal that the keeper couldn't reach. She was inconsolable with grief but at least he team-mates rallied round to give her support.
England were the better team throughout and were unfortunate to go out like that.
Quill, what do you mean about domestic violence in relation to this competition?

Yep, I'd like to know that too. It was heartbreaking, their play was magnificent and had you on the edge of your seat, poor girl will blame herself forever and she had played so well during the match, it was just one of those split second things you can't take back.

Pretty disgusting she has multiple violent outburst but because she is a woman and sports star gets away with it
U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo had domestic violence assault charges against her dismissed on Tuesday, ending what she called 'one of the most difficult and emotionally draining times of my life.'
Now she can turn her attention fully to World Cup preparations.
The case had been set for trial in a week in suburban Seattle. The U.S. Soccer Federation had resisted pressure from some to suspend Solo after she was charged with two misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree assault stemming from an altercation with her half-sister and 17-year-old nephew at a party in June.
'Today's decision brings closure to what has been one of the most difficult and emotionally draining times of my life,' Solo said in a statement, which she posted on Facebook and received 275 primarily supportive comments in the first 55 minutes.

Re: England vs Japan; women's World Cup
I felt sorry for the poor child on England's team that was responsible for that Japanese goal. But she's got to learn: you care a lot, you cry a lot. She's lucky...she'll be stronger for it.
Charges are being refiled for Hope Solo. (The Daily Mail article erroneously makes it appear that that it is over.) Because of their elite and privileged status, athletes often escape criminal responsibility. Ray Rice is an example of how the League (or any of them) corrupts itself in an attempt to absolve its heroes. American Soccer is trying to hide behind the fact that it has been heretofore untouched by scandal, and because they think (wrongfully) the public assumes that domestic violence is a male problem.
The boycott of the woman's World Cup is intended to draw attention to the fact that corruption is the same, wherever it appears.

Re: England vs Japan; women's World Cup
it was an unfortunate mistake by the girl and it cost the team but hey that's sport, look at some of the penalties we have missed over the years..
I hope she can forgive herself and get over it...
