Britain’s oldest Poppy seller, 92, found dead ‘lost faith in people’
Britain’s oldest Poppy seller has been found dead at the bottom of a gorge after ‘losing faith in people’. Olive Cooke, 92, died after becoming ‘overwhelmed’ with dozens of charities sending her begging letters. The good Samaritan was found dead at the bottom of Avon Gorge by police last week – two days before the 70th anniversary of VE Day. Mrs Cooke, who suffered health problems and was considered vulnerable, had dedicated 76 years of her life to raising money for the Royal British Legion and is believed to have sold around 30,000 poppies. Her son Del Whelan admitted that she found it ‘difficult to say no’ and eventually ‘just had enough’.

That's a real shame and the Lady was a real trooper. Totally out of order if she was hounded by begging letters and if people did that then shame on them.
RIP Olive Cook.

I read about that a few days ago. It's quite bizarre really, but all these letters and calls from charities can become overwhelming. Obviously, their heart is in the right place, and they want to make money for their cause, but it can get too much.
I think that charities shouldn't be allowed to pass on your details. Apart from anything else, if you get bombarded with letters from charities, you tend to stop opening them, and then none of them get anything.

I never give to "big" charities, have you seen the amount of money the men at the top pay themselves?

charities that have prestigious address and large offices are more likely to be in it for what they can get themselves.nicko wrote:I never give to "big" charities, have you seen the amount of money the men at the top pay themselves?
One of the worst these days is the RSPCA that is more about politics than animal welfare.
