Tory MP referred to Information Commissioner for alleged ’email list abuse’
A Tory MP has been referred to the Information Commissioner over the apparent transfer of constituent email addresses from his constituency office to his Conservative Party campaign on the eve of polling day.
Desperate to cling onto the marginal seat of Plymouth Sutton and Devonport (an August 2014 poll gave Labour a 13 point lead in the constituency with help from UKIP) bumbling Oliver Colvile dispatched a last-ditch appeal for support to a large email list.
He prevailed, just — with a majority of 523.
One problem: numerous recipients complain they’ve only ever corresponded with Colvile’s parliamentary email address — and never with the local Tories. Despite this the email carried an imprint from … Colvile’s campaign.
And the real giveaway? The email list is called “Constituency Casework Newsletter”
With Colvile and his agent ignoring Scrapbook’s request for comment, one might say that something doesn’t smell quite right about their attitude to data protection.
A complaint to the standards commissioner is also on the cards given that the email list looks to have been developed with funding from the taxpayer.

Not good. We have to be exceptionally careful about information we hold.
