Mob beats woman to death for burning the Koran in Afghanistan
An angry mob in Kabul killed a woman and set her body alight for allegedly burning a copy of the Koran Photo: Radio Free Afghanistan
A mob in the Afghan capital killed a woman, set her body on fire and threw it into a muddy river in the heart of Kabul on Thursday, a police official said.
Shocking video has emerged of crowds of men hurled bricks at and repeatedly stamped on the 27-year-old, named only as Farkhunda, near the Shah-e Doh Shamshira shrine and mosque.
The mob carried out the lynching after she was accused of setting fire to pages of the Koran. However her parents have told police that their daughter had suffered with mental illness for many years and that she had not meant to burn Islam's holy book
While Afghanistan is struggling to emerge from the suppression of women under Taliban rule that began in the 1990s, such public attacks, especially in the capital, remain ununsual.
Women's rights have made gains since the 2001 ousting of the militants, who follow a hardline interpretation of Islamic law, but observers worry that progress is at risk as widespread violence against women persists and women remain under-represented in politics and public life.
A 2013 UN report noted that most violence against women goes underreported, particularly in rural areas.
The head of Kabul's criminal police General Farid Afzali told AFP: "A woman burned a copy of the Koran in the Shahi Doshamshira neighbourhood."

All over a man made book.
Hence why Islam has to reform, as here again is another bad idea, where the belief is to murder people for defacing a book.

They appear to be very violent people at times.
What other country allows a public and violent beating like that?

the bolded part is a bonusWomen’s rights activist Soraya Parlika added: “This is the first time in Afghan history that we have witnessed such brutality. This is such an inhumane and un-Islamic act against a woman.”
Some carried banners calling for the resignation of the city’s police chief.
In downtown Kabul, meanwhile, residents of the Afghan capital planted a tree near the site of Farkhunda’s killing to mark the brutal assault.
“I feel as if they have killed and burnt my daughter,” said one tearful woman at the tree-planting.
“All those people are cowards, they should have protected her,” the woman, who declined to be identified, said.
“They could have protected her if they wanted to.”
The demonstration followed another protest by scores of people Monday, demanding the killers be brought to justice.
President Ashraf Ghani has condemned the killing as “heinous” and ordered an investigation into her death.
Interior Minister Noorul Haq Ulumi told parliament on Monday that Farkhunda had not in fact burnt a Koran.
The chief spokesman for Kabul’s police force was also sacked after making comments on social media condemning the burning of the Koran, rather than the lynching.

Just because opne person and a minority advocate it is not allowed Veya, many others believe it is very much commanded to do so and hence why it happens so often in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan, because it is inherantly taught by religious preachers to an otherwise majority illiterate populace and to deny this is denying the problem that there is a clear view helpd by a substancial amount of the populous of each country that think it is their duty to act out a death penalty.
Others have been arressted before for crimes like this and you will find in many cases hardly any of them face any punishments for their crimes.

Hundreds gathered in the capital of Afghanistan today to attend the burial of a 27-year-old woman who was murdered by an angry mob for allegedly burning a copy of the Koran.
Farkhunda was beaten to death and her body set on fire by a large group of men outside a mosque in central Kabul on Thursday, in full view of several policemen.
As her coffin was carried through the crowd by family members and women's rights activists, Afghanistan's top criminal investigator claimed Farkhunda had been wrongly accused.
Afghan women's rights activists carry the coffin of 27-year-old Farkhunda, who was beaten to death by an angry all-male mob in broad daylight in central Kabul on Thursday
Mobile phone footage from the incident this week shows the all-male mob attacking Farkhunda in broad daylight, beating her to death with sticks and bricks before being set on fire.
'Last night I went through all documents and evidence once again, but I couldn't find any evidence to say Farkhunda burnt the Holy Koran,' General Mohammad Zahir told reporters at her funeral.
'Farkhunda was totally innocent.'
General Zahir promised to 'punish all those involved', adding that 13 people, including eight police officers, had already been arrested.
Members of Farkhunda's family has today denied reports that she was mentally ill, claiming this was a made-up defence to protect her reputation.
Her father said the 27-year-old worked as an Islamic studies teacher studies and could recite the Koran by heart. He insisted she was not involved in burning the Muslim holy book.
'Farkhunda was a deeply religious girl. She used to recite the holy Koran and pray five times a day,' her brother Najeebullah Malikzada said today.
Farkhunda's funeral was attended by dozens of women's rights activists, several of whom also helped carry her coffin, demanding justice for the young teacher.
'This is a crime against this family, a crime against a sister and a crime against humanity,' said Bari Salam, a human rights activist.
'All those involved and all those who supported her killing should be brought to justice,' he said.
President Ashraf Ghani condemned the killing as 'heinous' and ordered a commission to investigate the incident.
He said police, who play a crucial part in the war against Taliban insurgents, were not well-trained to contain such incidents.
'Almost 90 per cent of the duties of the police today are focused on fighting, which is not their constitutional role, it is not their legal role,' Ghani told reporters on Saturday.
'Focusing on civilian capabilities, on enforcement of the rule of law, is key to us.'
In a statement on Sunday, the interior ministry said 13 police officers were suspended, including the police chief responsible for the area.
Police separately said they arrested 21 people, including eight policemen.
'I will question the police... we have started our inquiry,' General Zahir Zahir, head of criminal investigation at the interior ministry, said today.
'Even If I get killed, I won't let any of her perpetrators get away with it,' he added.

You know I was proud to see so many Muslim women take a stand here and even more now fear for their lives that they did so.
I have always said the key to reformation in islam will come from women not taking anymore the dictated rules governed by Muslim men

You can never think straight can you, it matters not what she says, when many other Muslims strongly believe they are justified that they can kill someone. This is not about how is right but what is believed is right by a substancial amount of the populace and again is norn from the fact many are illiterate and thus unable to question aspects of islam because ity is taught to them verablly by preachers. Do not forget thsi country has been previously under taliban rule for many years where such beliefs are ingrained into society with many children growing up believing such beliefs are justified in islam.
So it matters little what the President says, many Muslims women in this country languish in prisons where they are the victims of rape, or did you not know this or the very fact many of these kind of murders that take place see very little justice to those who commit them

For one I apologised to korben which porves sassy you are only interested inshit stirring.
Now I hope the admin take note of your shit stirring again;
Now lets see some more evidence:
It was women who carried the coffin of 27-year-old Farkhunda who was beaten to death by a mob in Kabul last week. That ran counter to local customs, but women felt only they could properly offer the slain woman her final rites — and that they stood firmly beside one other in opposition to the blows that took her life.
Farkhanda — who has been identified by only her first name — was attacked after she told off some men selling amulets outside of a shrine. Her family told reporters that she regarded the amulet sellers as parasites who preyed on people’s hopes — a notion that ran counter to the view of Islam she held having just completed a degree in religious studies.
While her actions may seem brazen given the outcome, many Afghan women stand up for what they believe no matter what the cost. Many in this list of just five risked their lives to educate girls under the Taliban, and continue to risk their lives by advocating for the rights of women in a country where women are four times more likely to face abuse than finish secondary school.

did you read the article
it doesn't add anything the and other example is from 1999 under Taliban rule.
and the 1 gov't official that has since lost his job, pretty sure the president and majority of police are a better indicator of opinion than 1 dude that has been fired.
and again an opinion piece from a white western French woman OR the opinion of the AFGHANI WOMEN'S RIGHT CAMPAIGNER living in Afghanistan...
You really don't have clue when it come to sources do you

the Men that commit these CRIMES in the name of religion are Just as much Criminals under Afghan law as the Cartels are under Mexican law
“I deal with criminal and enforce law, naturally they are unhappy with me,” she said in the documentary, Half-Value Life. “They regularly send me threatened messages and sometimes even describe what my children are wearing. It is difficult for me and demands much struggle on my part to do my job effectively and still be a good mother.”
She hopes her own struggles will help girls in Afghanistan will work to make their country a better place.
“The message that I give to young girls is that there is no career that they cannot do as long as they are equipped with the knowledge,” Bashir said in an interview with the International Museum of Women. “I also make them aware of their rights, and I tell them that if they work in the government of Afghanistan, they can have significant role in rule of law, and specifically justice for women. I believe it so important to lead society toward justice!”

It adds plenty to what I have been saying in regards to the discrmination faced by women which has been inherant due to the fact many people ahd grown up under the Taliban let alone imans teaching a view of blasphemy which is the death penalty in the country by the way.
The fact is Veya you never want to tackle real problems, where many people in this country are facing the worst kind of discrmination espcially woem to get even something a fundemental right as education. The basic bad ideas I speak of found in the religion discrminate against women who have been raped and you call yourself a Liberal
A Liberal like I am stands against injustices and there a plenty in this country where again i said it would be the Muslim women that will bring about the change, i suggest you read back.
You are just a very extremist leftie not willing to listen to fundemnetal real problems

Re: Mob beats woman to death for burning the Koran in Afghanistan
the last one sentenced to death was in 2003 and even then neither of those 2 have been executed and both are believed to have left Afghanistan
all since 2003 have been 20 years with one in 2007 being commuted to 2 years, relased to leave Afghanistan in 2009
and by LAW they must be given 3 days to recent if they do they do not face death penalty
all since 2003 have been 20 years with one in 2007 being commuted to 2 years, relased to leave Afghanistan in 2009
The authorities can punish blasphemy with death if the blasphemy is committed by a male of sound mind over age 18 or by a female of sound mind over age 16. Anyone accused of blasphemy has three days to recant. If an accused does not recant, death by hanging may follow.

You see this is why you are so utterly shortsighted.
The sad fact here is that more than anything why people are up in arms is that she was innocent of any blasphemy, when the belief is in the country that blasphemy is a punishment to be carried out with a sentence of death.
You seem to be exusing the fact that the law should even have a place in society which is half the problem here. The fact is the law is based on religious interpretation and the fact is there are those that believe they should enact this law because they view this command as divine.
This is why more than anything Islam needs a reformation.
There are two major wrongs here, one that an innocent woman was beaten to death and two that the nation has a law which does criminalize with a punishment of death those found guilty of blasphemy.
Thus it shows you are missing the fundemental points here

Re: Mob beats woman to death for burning the Koran in Afghanistan
and you seem to be suggesting a crime is allowed by law
WHICH IS CLEARLY ISN'T
they are criminals just like the cartels, just like a paedophile in the UK
they ARE NOT SUPPORTED by the general populace.
Yes Blasphemy should not be punishable and the fact is that they have moved forward proven by the fact there has been not authorised executions for blasphemy since the fall of the Taliban.. that fact is completely ignored in favour of calling all Muslims murder lovers!!!

You still not grasping this are you veya
The law of blasphemy seen as a punishement of death is supported by a majority of the populace.
This is a fact and why there needs a reformation in islam
The outrage here was more on the fact this woman was murdered because she was wrongly accused of blasphemy.
Notice that point, "wrongly accused" of blasphemy.
Others have been the victims of such crimes in this country with little done by the Government and this is the first time, where people have stood up and been counted of which I highly back and revere that they have, but are any of them also calling for an end to blasphemy being seen as a crime in the law?
Answer that simple point.
Now we are seeing people standing up rightly being counting trying to bring about justice but it is not far reaching enough because also the view has to change of a perception that such a crime is punishable by death.
Do you not remember what happened when some soldier burnt some old copies of the Quran and some thousands took to the street rioting and killing?
You see you are so short sighted to why a view and perception comes from on every level.
The main problem here stems from the fact that they view blasphemy as a heinous crime, when it never should be.

I think you will find there has been a couple of democratic elections now and there is no mass large voice opposing this law Veya, which is the problem. I have no doubt some do very much oppose such a law but again this will need educating over time where this country has been indoctrinated for years under subjucation of the taliban.
I agree Rome was not built in a day and why I back those looking to bring about change
