AND unfortunately it's in the sector that it boots up from !!!
SO, until I replace this hard drive, I'm having an erratic and unreliable compootah on my hands here ~ so that may mean me occasionally disappearing for days on end, if it gets much worse..
OR crashes completely.
AND ~ before veya says that it's all my fault for using Apple computers, I would just like to add that Apple doesn't make their own HDDs, but buys them off the same OEM suppliers, like Hitachi and SATA, that the other manufacturers buy theirs from..
don`t know anything about the apple systems but go to the HD drives manufactures web site (if you can ) and download there disk tools might be able to map out what sounds like bad blocks

BIG difference is still the ability to make your own

You know, I used to swear by Seagate until I bought a 2T one recently to hold my photos and it started to click ominously while writing a large batch of files.
It seems like it recovered okay and I didn't lose much (maybe some really old stuff) but I'm having trouble trusting it now ...
Re: I'VE GOT A CORRUPTED HDD...
the main reason is that they will send you a new one for 4 years. even if you DELL or HP warranty has run out either WD or Seagate will still replace the part.
they still die (maybe less than cheaper brands), if you get one that seems a bit dodgy early try and get it swapped (might have to exaggerate the issues a little bit )

Re: I'VE GOT A CORRUPTED HDD...
so who made the HDD?
does apple give you a disk to reinstall OS from if you were to get the HDD replaced?
I'd have pulled it open and read the sticker But I do build my own so no sealed box to worry about.

Re: I'VE GOT A CORRUPTED HDD...
umm sorry to break it to you but that is the cable end
SATA is a type of connection not a brand
But good news is that it is the standard so almost any should be able to replace it.
you'd need a 'bootable' copy of the OS, cause what you are running now wont be there is you swap the disk.

If the Apple you got is similar to the one in the thread below I recommend the Seagate HDD they are good

Re: I'VE GOT A CORRUPTED HDD...
repairing the original HD and isolating the bad sectors may work but it`s not really worth it as the bad sectors will grow and you risk loosing anything that on itLone Wolf wrote:
UPDATE: Last week I replaced the Optical [DVD/CD] drive with a second internal drive, to give my laptop 2 internal drives...
THEN, on Friday, I swapped out the old original (and sick..) HD with a much faster Solid State Drive ['SSD'] that runs nearly 20 times faster (!) than a standard HD ~ I will use this as the Start-up Disk once I have all of the System files cloned onto it and working properly.
THE original HD was then placed into a new case - giving me a second external drive = 4 HDs in total when they're all connected..
IF repairing the original HD and isolating the bad setors waa Stage 1, the above two steps were Stages 2 and 3; so I'm now at Stage 4 - getting the O/S, bacups and updates sorted to give me better efficiency..
STAGE 5 will be extra RAM and a better battery; while Stage 6 (probably next year sometime..) will include more external storage. I reckon by that stage, I would have saved a motza on the cost of a new computer..
best just to bin it

Re: I'VE GOT A CORRUPTED HDD...
Depending on how old the drive that is grubbed (technical term) is you may be able to get it replaced under warrantyLone Wolf wrote:
I think the original HD is about 18% gone, so far...
I've got that HD isolated outside of the computer now, in it's own enclosure. In a few weeks, or months (when I have some more spare cash..) I'll replace it with a new 2TB HD - giving me a good external. backup.
I WAS going to increase the RAM, then add a second internal drive, then a new HD to replace the original. THIS drive starting to break down turned those plans on their head..
go to the drives manufactures site and check its RMA. warranty status
ps if you not sure how to do that take a picture of the label and pm me it i will check for you
