Already getting into the St. Patrick's Day spirit
My brother's been hosting a party for about a decade that has turned into a minor local cultural phenomenon for about a decade ... I do the music every year

I notice the Yanks go all dewy eyed about the irish, most of them couldn't find Ireland on the map if they tried. Mind you they are keen to send them money to help "our poor oppressed brothers to fight the English!!

Some of them send money to terrorists? Yeah.
I don't do St Patrick's day, what with not being Irish.

A good fight Quill. Yet to see one to beat the John Wayne - Victor McLaglen fight from The Quiet Man. Classic, wasn't it?

Oh yes sending money to our brave boys they call it.
Those are the brave boys that blew up a group of bandsmen, A girl guide troop and a little boy out buying a present for his mother on Mothering Sunday among many many others.

I have about a quarter Irish ancestry, not much English. St. Patrick's day has always been a big deal in my family.

I am half Irish, and to be proud of this, is to be proud of stupidity.
Nationalism
The reason why we have so many conflicts in the world is because we choose to decide we are different based on language and culture.
You hold Ben some far removed attraction to an Irish connection which only exists out of how somehow being born to a Land makes you automatically of a new biological race. This is what is wrong, sorry Ben, you are no more Irish than I am. It is a concept and I know Irish people and Irish Americans are very different. It is a culture, one that is very different even in Ireland.
Not knocking you bro, but lets have some honesty here, you really have little connection to Ireland itself.
When I say nationalism is a bad thing, when we see its good for sports, because this concept allows people to wrongly believe they are far more special, when biologically that is impossible for groups

So I shouldn't look forward to celebrating a holiday that has always been a fun time for me, and has links to my family?
Re: Already getting into the St. Patrick's Day spirit
ST Patrick's day will be celebrated in many places in the world and many people who are not Irish will join in. It happens here in Edinburgh and remember it's all Ireland - North and South.

Do as you please Ben, but lets take stock here, you want to celebrate the Christian saint day, being as you are an athiest.
Odd that one, you want to look forward to being a Christian for the day and claiming to be Irish, even though you are another made up conception. American.
Celebrate being human, that would be a good start. Celebrating being any nationality is nothing short of difference based on nothing biollogical.
I will celebrate Paddies day, though not for any of the reasons you could ever think of Ben

Re: Already getting into the St. Patrick's Day spirit
I think I need to explain myself to Ben
The identity of Irish people is based around a Chistian saint
Saint Patricks "day"
That means for me to celebrate this Irish day I have to identify with Christianity and not whether I want to celebrate being Irish. What you are doing is celebrating a Christain day and a Christian Saint as your identity not any Irish national day.
Can you see my point Ben?

Re: Already getting into the St. Patrick's Day spirit
I celebrate the Irish and Irish-American culture that some of my ancestors came from -- the food, the music, the spirit. I don't think you have to be Christian to celebrate St. Patrick's or even Christmas, for that matter. I know a died-in-the-wool atheist who celebrates Mardi Gras in a big way every year, that doesn't make him a hypocrite, does it?
Hell, I thought being an atheist was all about NOT having to abide by a bunch of nonsense rules

you carry on.....enjoy....although I hate Guiness and Corned Beef and Cabbage but ill eat as much soda and wheaten bread and Irish salmon as you can give me.
I have English, German, Scots-Irish, French, Scandinavian and Cherokee blood. We think there's some Italian but were still looking. We tend to focus more on St. Andrews and Burns night and the 4th in this house for obvious reasons.
you'd better be playing The Chieftains and The Pogues boyo or else you can pog mo thoin x

Irish stew, shepherd's pie, soda bread, colcannon, plenty of Guinness and Irish whiskey along with pretty much every other alcoholic beverage known ... and I do put on a little Chieftains but I don't really care for them. Lots of Pogues, some American bands like Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly along with some lesser-knowns like The Mahones, and some older stuff that makes everybody else cringe, like Leo McCaffrey

Yes, I doubt anyone thinks about their Irish heritage anymore. Perhaps it all started with Irishmen who were first generation imports, but now it's just a reason to drink anymore.
Maybe in south Boston they send money over to Belfast...for sure they will be drinking during the parade. But it's not really a nationalist thing over here; just a big party.
It's very big in SF. There is a street with nothing but Irish pubs on it...the city closes it down and people spill out into the street and have a common party all day.

Still not grasping the point are you Ben around an identity and Christianity.
Agin the identitry of being Irish here is Christianity, where you are then celebrating Christianity more than you are being Irish, because this day is about a Christian saint who has been identified as Irish because of so called miricles he performed there.
The view is why does it have to continue you as a Christian symbol for a day to celebrate being Irish.
Try thinking about these points

I think part of it is that Real St pats day and New world St Pats day are really 2 different things
in the new world it is just a celebration of the Irish.
And is Mardi Gras meant to be religious
If so that is cool, since it is synonymous with celebrating Homosexuality in Australia

You're absolutely right, here in the U.S. St. Pat's is really Irish Heritage Day, much like Columbus Day is more about being Italian than celebrating Columbus. Mardi Gras is just a big party, but it comes from old celebrations on the eve of Lent, when Catholics give up something they like because Jesus. The party was originally to celebrate excess before you had to sacrifice something.

most religious festivals (from whatever religion you choose) came from pagan/folk festivals - they were just co-opted.

And as others have said before, lots of Americans who aren't of Irish ancestry celebrate St. Patrick's Day, too.
Part of Jimmy Fallon's St. Pat's song on Saturday Night Live:
Jimmy Fallon: [ holding guitar ] St. Patrick's Day is coming up, and I can't wait! I love it! As you know, you don't have to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Last year, I went to my favorite Irish bar, and I was the only Irish guy there.
[ singing to the tune of John Mayer's "Your Body Is A Wonderland" ]
"There's a rabbi with a shillelagh
There's a McCormack named Sean.
There's an Indian dude playing bagpipes
There's a Chinese leprechaun.
Nobody's here from Ireland!
Nobody's here from Ireland, that's for sure.
Nobody's here from Ireland!
Nobody's here from Ireland!"
