CONTROVERSIAL moves to allow a private firm to run a medical scanner funded by public donations are to be challenged by hospital bosses.

The contract to diagnose cancer and other illnesses in thousands of patients was handed to Alliance Medical even though the NHS had offered to do the work for £7 million less.

The £3 million PET/CT scanner was installed a year ago at the Royal Stoke University Hospital thanks to a grant, a bequest and £250,000 from a fund-raising appeal.

Now hospital leaders have confirmed they will formally challenge the decision made by NHS England.

This really needs to looked into to establish why the NHS bid was rejected. I'm sure Tory MP Malcolm Rifkind could shed some light on it - he's on the Board of the company who were awarded the contract
