Utah, the 17th-ranked college football team in the nation, was on its way to a 14-0 lead against No. 4 Oregon when something truly bizarre happened.

Utah wide receiver Kaelin Clay caught a deep pass from quarterback Travis Wilson and appeared to run it into the end zone for a 79-yard touchdown. But as the home crowd went wild, perceptive Oregon players realized that Clay had, unbelievably, dropped the ball at the one-yard line -- rather than waiting until he had actually crossed the goal line, as is traditional.

The ball lay on the ground for several seconds, until Oregon linebacker Joe Walker picked it up and ran it back for a 99-yard touchdown, tying the game and sending the crowd into shock.

Every once in a while, a player pulls something like this that people never, ever forget Smile Like Leon Lett, who was actually a really good player, but did it on a few occassions, including the memorable Ice Bowl game in Dallas against Miami, about 21 years ago:

I don't know why the video cuts short, but the Dolphins kicked a field goal to win it as time ran out ...

Or wrong-way Regals, who got spun around in a scrum and ran nearly 100-yards the wrong way, to score a touchdown for the other team.

This play wasn't quite that bad.  Still, it was bad enough that Clay stupidly let go of the ball a foot before entering the end zone, but then Oregon's Walker picked up the ball and scored 100-yards at the other end.

I've heard of Crooks are Dumb.  There's got to be an award for football players who are that dumb.

Yeah...but the Bears are having a baaaaaad season.  How could they let Jordy Nelson get that wide open...twice!

But give your boys credit.  Clay Matthews has changed positions to inside linebacker, and doesn't miss a beat.  New center, better that the last.  And of course, my boy from here in the North Bay...what is his name?  Ah yes, Aaron Rogers.

I raised him. From Butte College, originally...look it up. Transferred the last two years to Berkeley...which, ahem...well, I won't say it.

Why the fook the Niners took Alex Smith* that year, and left Rogers to the 24th pick eludes me. Of course I know...they had idiot Nolan as the coach in 2005.

Wiki wrote:Rodgers was widely projected to be drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, his childhood team, making him the number one overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. The 49ers drafted Alex Smith out of Utah instead and Rodgers slid all the way down to the 24th overall pick by the Green Bay Packers.

*Nothing against Smith. He is excellent too. But Rogers was raised and groomed to be a Niner.
