On/off switch for aging cells discovered by scientists

An on-and-off “switch” has been discovered in cells that may hold the key to healthy aging. This switch points to a way to encourage healthy cells to keep dividing and generating, for example, new lung or liver tissue, even in old age. In our bodies, newly divided cells constantly. However, most human cells cannot divide indefinitely -– with each division, a cellular timekeeper at the ends of chromosomes shortens. When this timekeeper becomes too short, cells can no longer divide, causing organs and tissues to degenerate, as often happens in old age. But there is a way around this countdown, researchers have found.

WOULD also help a bit if other researchers also find some cures for such debilitating diseases as cancers, arthritis, MS, muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, and Alzheimer's before the rich people of the world are able to buy a few extra decades of life...

AS the premature deaths of Linda McCartney and Steve Jobs have shown, even billionaires can't stop the progression of certain complaints..

NO doubt there are a good many people in their 70s and 80s who simply wouldn't want another 30, 40 or 50 years unless their physical complaints are eased at the same time.

IN a world that is already grossly overpopulated by the human race, I reckon population control is still the leading problem in this area ~ and not much hope of that in the foreseeable future, when you look at the lack of welfare and adequate healthcare in much of Africa, the Indian subcontinent and S.E. Asia.. bom
