Outrage Over The 20-Cent Tip That NFL Player Left At A Burger Restaurant

The owner of PYT Burger, Tommy Up, decided to share what he said was McCoy’s receipt on Facebook, furious that the NFL player would leave a 20-cent tip on a meal that was over $60.

I think the fact the US has to tip is a bad system but... If an American doesn't want to tip they should make sure the Servers get the minimum wage (2 bucks something for an adult is a joke.. personally I'd prefer to just pay an extra couple of bucks for the and pay them properly) And they Guy was obviously being an ass hole He didn't even make it a round number or just left it a zero.

~ MESSAGE FROM THE OWNER:
I would like to address the LeSean McCoy tipping situation and our role in it.
For starters, I take total and complete responsibility for sharing this receipt. It was not our server's decision, it was mine. I am to blame.
I decided to take action after some serious thought. And while I'd like to apologize to Mr McCoy, I cannot in good conscience do so. I stand by my actions one hundred percent.
Mr McCoy and his three companions came into my place on Monday afternoon, and immediately the whole staff was excited. Mr McCoy is a skilled athlete and is one of our beloved Philadelphia Eagles. A true Philly legend and a sports hero. Understandably my staff was really pumped, especially on the heels of they terrific win the day before. (Go Eagles!).
Mr McCoy and his friend sat inside at a booth next to my management and next to me. They were given excellent service. Impeccable service. If anything, our server was a little nervous as was our food runner, because they are big, big fans.
He and his group, from the moment they sat down, were verbally abusive to our staff in the most insulting ways. The derogatory statements about women and their sheer contempt for the staff serving them wasn't the end, however. After Mr McCoy and his group left I looked over and saw their server, my friend, with his head bowed down and with a very confused look on his face. I took the receipt out of his hand and I couldn't believe that anyone could be so callous. Mr McCoy had left a .03% tip for our staff. Our staff that was beyond excited to see him walk into our burger joint and was excited to serve him. That's twenty cents on a tab of over $60. Twenty cents that our server has to split with the food runner and the bartender. Two dimes from an insulting multimillionaire.
I bet Mr McCoy is usually an awesome dude. And everyone has their bad days. But I'm from Philly and have had the pleasure of meeting many of our bad ass sports heroes. Ron Jaworski I met as a kid and I love. Iverson I loved. Mike Schmidt! You name 'em. I love all of our athletes past and present. Hometown heroes who treat those below them with some respect. And maybe Mr McCoy was having a "bad day" after his big victory all that, but the reports of him receiving "bad service" is a complete slanderous lie, and my crew here is better than that and deserves better than that.
At the end of the day, I did what I felt my heart told me to do. And I don't want anything from Mr McCoy, but...maybe an apology to his server who gave him excellent service would be cool.
Again, I am the owner and I take full responsibility for my actions. Eagles fans, I feel ya. Id be pissed too. But a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do and stick up for his friends.
Hate mail should be directed to tommy@pytburger.com. I will respond to you right after I catch up on this mornings hate mail.

this is why I am not an Eagles fan....remember Michael Vick??
minimum wage here is $7.95 approx......junior now has his first job at IHOP....they pay him $4.40 an hour (40 cents an hour taken off so he can have a meal at work up to $9 with free drinks) and his tips have to round that up to minimum wage. supposedly it works out. so far he id doing ok tip wise cause of his accent
but yeah he was being an asshat what with the verbal and attitude - hopefully his ego has taken a hit.

I beg to differ. It hasn't gone to McCoy's head. He still lives the humble life, where a tip isn't taken for granted.
Gd for him. A tip is a tip, but extortion is extortion. These are just a bunch of Philly shysters trying to cash in on the good fortune of having someone famous drop in. Shame on them (not that they'd care).
Regardless of what you think about tipping, it's original intent was supposed to be in addition to the overall cost of the restaurant, for extraordinary service. Conversely, a poor tip always meant that the customer was treated to poor service. It has never been declared as a compensation for a restaurant's cheap practices underpaying their help.
McCoy was simply following the time-honored tradition. I think it's ironic that the restaurant owner is the one who takes issue with this incident, taking it to Facebook. He's the one cheating his employees by not paying them a decent wage. The cheap bastard probably wants to turn attention away from his wage and hour problems with the Federal Government, Department of Labor.
Waddya expect from Philly...the worst restaurant city in the western hemisphere?

The Eagles running back said he left only 20 cents on an over $61 lunch tab at PYT because, as ESPN reported, he tips on service. He continued by saying that the tip was a statement and that he would do the same thing in the same situation.
ESPN quoted McCoy saying that "You can't disrespect somebody and expect them to tip you." The restaurantwent public with the small tip earlier this week, by posting the receipt it claimed was McCoy's on its Facebook page.
“I just thought it was pretty callous and insensitive,” PYT owner Tommy Up told NBC10 in Philadelphia. “Twenty cents isn’t an industry standard.”
According to an article NBC10 posted, the waiter who claims he served McCoy and his friends said things didn’t go well, including making a mistake on their appetizer.
The waiter also told NBC10 McCoy and his party acted rude toward him.
PYT has received a mixed reaction after posting the receipt on its Facebook page. Some people have commented that it was unprofessional on their part, while others sympathize with the server.

@quill
then I hope he is at the protests for the minimum wage improvements for food servers. It is ridiculous that they are not getting the already stupidly low normal minimum wage to pay them below the $8.
Honestly if I ever travel to the USA i would be generous with my tips like I would be in a 3rd world nation since that is basically what the system makes these poor people live like.
and someone carrying stuff for you is worth more than 20 cent, he should have got more than 20 cent just for getting the food to the table. he's following the time-honored tradition of being a rich jerk

Hi veya,
The person you want at your protests for raising the minimum wage us Mr. Up...the owner of PYT Burger. He is the wrong that needs to be corrected.
As you point out, tipping is an abysmal way to compensate for cheapskates like Mr. Up and BYT Burger. In the restaurant business, tipping has become the way to make up for the wrong of uncompensation and undercompensation in the restaurant industry. It has become so commonplace that people like you come along with the expectation that it is the standard. How sad, when we fault the good Samaritan who, for good and valid reason, doesn't come through...while literally applauding the asshole who is the cause of the problem.

@Quill
The Travel Guides says it is part of American culture for the customer to pay for the server...
Maybe You all need to look at how people are getting paid, Because that is what the world is told is the American way (as we don't tip here except exceptional service, maybe)

And they are wrong. Yes, I know Travel Guides is simply being practical, but so is Congress when it shies away from gun control laws and regulations. It doesn't make it right...but it is practical. (Two thoughts for the price of one this morning.)
What is audacious about this is that the very slime that is causing the problem--the cheapskate employer--is the one pounding his chest.
Ironation with balls.

im so sick of this too
the guy gave shitty service, he even admitted to messing up orders
a tip is earned, it isnt my fault they only pay 2 bucks an hour in most states, work at mcdonalds if you have to live off tips.
i waited almost a half hour just to get my order and no they werent busy and still was ignored after that, should i still leave 15% tip? i dont think i should anymore
plus the guy said " just because you're a NFL STAR doesnt make me your servant" last time i checked he had a serving job
