Commuters Push Train Off Trapped Passenger

"People power" has saved a commuter after he became trapped between a train and a station platform.

Dozens of passengers helped tilt the carriage on Wednesday to free the man, who slipped as he was boarding just moments before the train was due to leave Sterling Station in western Australia for Perth.

Security cameras captured the fall which resulted in the passenger's left leg becoming wedged in a two-inch gap between the carriage and platform.

Station staff's attempts to pull him free failed, and passengers were initially told to move to the opposite side of the carriage in the hope their weight would shift it away from his leg, without success.

Eventually, they were asked to get off the vehicle and help push the train to free up enough space for him to be lifted back up to safety.

Claire Krol, a spokeswoman for train operator Transperth, said: "It is the first time we've seen something like this happen.

"We were really fortunate that the staff were there straight away ... and all of the passengers not only listened to the instructions from staff, but pitched in and helped.

"This is a real case of passengers of working together ... and people power are the perfect words to describe it."

The man was treated by paramedics but was able to catch a later train.

How many times have we heard, Mind the Gap! And here is the reason.

 

I saw that story 3 or 4 times on the news here yesterday.

You can see that he wasn't paying attention - those yellow lines on the step and the platform are put there for a reason..


A few months ago, some people may have seen another news report where somebody fell down between the platform and a train as it was pulling up at the platform (obviously a smallish, and somewhat lucky person..) ~ fortunately she rolled towards the platform and not the train when she landed near the tracks; and was only lightly injured when a couple of people hopped down to rescue her after that train had departed.

ANOTHER case of somebody being rather careless ?

I hope he bought them all a pint!

  IT wasn't so much the combined commuters' "strength", FTL, as their mass weight...

THE passengers on the train had already moved over to the off-side to see if that would tilt the carriage enough to free him..

WHEN that proved insufficient the railway guards and station staff then got the waiting passengers and other commuters on the platform to all add their weight to tilting the train sufficiently; where a couple of the station staff can be seen helping him out and up.

AFTER telling the station staff that he didn't need to go to hospital for medical attention, it was reported that he then caught the 9:30 to his destination.    

...and off into the night he rode. Lol.

Nice to see people pulling together! That man is a lucky lucky man.

Caught the next train as well. Must have been late for his work and if he went in and explained to his boss why he was late I'd bet his boss would have told him he's taking the piss.
