if you're having trouble following the allegiances of the various players in the Middle East right now, Slate have created a very handy Middle East Friendship Chart which neatly reduces decades of bloody conflict to a series of cartoonish emoticons. It's surprisingly useful.

That is a great reference, but are you like me and wonder how many of the groups are just pretending to be friends?
