Brute jailed for five years after stabbing blind girlfriend in the back
In an earlier attack, Brian Stott tried to strange Julie Paton with her guide dog's lead
A brute who stabbed his blind girlfriend in the back just weeks after she had left him has been jailed for five years.
Brian Stott attacked Julie Paton in her own home, plunging a knife into her lower back after he had thrown the TV on the floor.
It was the second ‘horrifying’ attack in the space of a few months, the Manchester Evening News reports.
In the first Stott pushed Julie into bushes as she walked home with her guide dog.
He wrapped the dog chain around her throat and tried to strangle her. The dog began to bark during the attack and ran off leaving Julie helpless.
Manchester Crown Court was told she was too scared to report that attack in October 2013.
But in January this year she told Stott she wanted to end their relationship.
Stott, 48, Baguley, Manchester, boxed up her belongings before pushing her out of the flat they were sharing.
Weeks later Stott went round to Julie’s own flat, where she had moved back to, and was aggressive and drunk.
He demanded £300 which she had been saving for him to go on holiday.
Stott searched the house emptying kitchen drawers and tipping the contents on the floor, while Julie remained in the living room terrified.
Stott then walked into the living room and threw the television on the floor before stabbing Julie with a knife he had picked up in the kitchen.
She suffered a severe wound to her lower back, which required stitches and spent several days in hospital.
A friend of Julie’s who was in the flat managed to call police and Stott was arrested at the scene.
In court Stott pleaded guilty to assault causing grievous bodily harm. He was jailed for five years and given a five year restraining order.
Detective Constable Louise Moss, said after the case: “It was a horrific attack. Stott preyed on his victim’s existing vulnerability because of visual impairness.
“It was premeditated and could have had fatal consequences.
“She was petrified of him even after he had been arrested and remanded in custody. She has been very courageous to follow this through.
“Now that he has been sentenced she is trying to get on with her life, but is still scared to go out alone.
“I hope other victims realise from this case that GMP and the courts do not tolerate domestic violence and we would encourage anyone who is being subjected to domestic violence to contact us.”

Agreed and we wonder why so many people have lost faith in the justice system?!
Crimes against people should receive a much harsher penalty than those involving property. Property can be replaced, lives cannot.
