Did a DNA/ancestry thingy
Cost a bit (I got it through AncestryDNA), but I found out my genome is:
58 percent Western European (France, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, etc.)
21 percent Irish
17 percent British
... and the rest Scandinavian/Finnish/Northern Russian.
I thought it was pretty cool to find out; I think this will be of more interest to people in immigrant countries where there was a tendency to forget about your family's Old World roots.
Anybody else done something like this?

I haven't, but I know mine has Maltese on one side and Jewish on the other, so would be interested. Didn't know you could do it through Ancestry, traced my family back quite a way with them.

Re: Did a DNA/ancestry thingy
Hi Ben. I had mine done some time ago by Oxford Ancestors, a DNA lab with ancestry options. Mine shows on my mother's side a link way back several thousand years to people who lived in Eastern Europe, and migrated to Britain when it was still attached to Europe, making her side some of the oldest residents in this fair isle. On my father's side it shows a Norman connection and possibly from the Basque region in France. There are a couple of towns in France and a river with the same surname as my family.
I've tracked the male side back to 1300s on the Isle of Wight, and then into Sussex, from there to other parts of the country. I found some fascinating tales, especially 2 brothers who were transported to Australia, and a girl of 15 also transported. I've been in touch with their descendants, still in Aus.'
Back in a minute, I'll find the website that's free and post it here for you all.
www.familysearch.org/ it's a Mormon site, but they have one of the biggest archives of ancestors. Well worth a browse.

Those Mormons do ancestry very well, I believe it's part of their religion.
I just think this stuff is really interesting. It makes me want to delve in and find out more about that 58 percent Western European; I know a lot of my ancestors came to the U.S. from Germany but I'd like to know more about them.
