Apparently Exxon's credo is "Be evil."
DALLAS — The CEO of Exxon Mobil Corp. says there's no quick replacement for oil, and sharply cutting oil's use to reduce greenhouse gas emissions would make it harder to lift 2 billion people out of poverty.
"What good is it to save the planet if humanity suffers?" CEO Rex Tillerson said at the oil giant's annual meeting Wednesday.
Tillerson jousted with environmental activists who proposed that the company set goals to reduce emissions from its products and operations.
Shareholders sided with the company and voted nearly 3-to-1 to reject the proposal.
By a 4-to-1 ratio, shareholders defeated a resolution to explicitly ban discrimination against gays. The Exxon board had argued that the company already banned discrimination of any type and didn't need to add language regarding gays.

Eww. That's their conservative mindset coming to the fore. I'm surprised it wasn't a unanimous vote with all 5 against gays, never mind 4/1.
Some conservatives are driven by insecurity. You can just imagine them thinking, "Let's not give these gays too many rights, or else they'll soon start getting ideas above their station, next thing you know they will start believing their own hype and thinking they really ARE equal to us. We the righteous hetero's are the chosen ones and the rest must be kept in their place at all costs, and no one is equal to us unless they have the same sexuality.". '
Equality is a very painful word to conservative ears and they will never wilingly vote that anyone should be equal to them, they think that's like turkeys voting for christmas. '

Re: Apparently Exxon's credo is "Be evil."
.
Besides the Koch Bros, and him-blowing-Trump-every-afternoon, there are very few significant individual shareholders in most of the big oil/gas/energy corporations these days...
The majority of the shares -- probably between 60 and 70%, up to 90%+ in some cases -- are now owned by pension funds, hedge funds, investment banks, other corporations themselves, and some government departments (and some countries national 'wealth funds')..
Makes for a very inter-tangled web of ownership, with many of the same faces turning up on various Boards of energy, mining, agribusiness, big pharma' and banking corporations.
As with the tobacco and coal mining sectors before them, the energy/oil/gas corporations know quite well that their days are numbered -- and have been steadily increasing their cross-shareholdings into alternative and 'renewable' energy, food processing, pharma' and health services -- preparing for many corporations to crash and burn over the next 30-->>40 years..
In the meantime, the modern-day shareholder demands for "ever increasing" short term returns has led for amoral bastard-led corporations such as Exxon-Mobil, BP and Dutch Shell to take on their all-too-familiar "Let's fuck the rest of the world, and Party! like there's no tomorrow !" mantras...
And also, the rapid increase in those wrong-headed "Prosperity before the environment ! Let them freeze in the dark ! Greed is good !" idiotic and nonsensical chants from the oil and mining corporations, with the likes of Tillerson as seen in the O/P..

This is a comment probably nobody will address, but I feel the need to put it out there -- why is it that if you hate gay people, you also don't think climate change is real?
Or if you think taxes should be lower, you also think that gun control is a bad idea?
None of those positions have anything to do with one another. It almost makes you think there are stupid people who are falling victim to people who understand exactly how to pull their strings, puppet-style ...
But I'm sure that's just crazy talk

Demagogues riling up Hillshepherds has been a thing since ancient Greece city states first introduced democracy.
In a time when democracy was not considered the 'default', what you are pointing out was exactly the argument against it.
this is also why that groups leadership are so against a well funded publically available education system. since that would cure society of hillshepherds they need to get their self serving policies through.
