BARRY O’Farrell has resigned as NSW Premier following his appearance at the Independent Commission against Corruption yesterday.

Mr O’Farrell denied receiving a $3000 bottle of wine from Australian Water Holdings boss Nick Di Girolamo yesterday but resigned today after it was revealed that he sent Mr Di Girolamo a card thanking him for the gift.

“I will be resigning the position and enabling a new Liberal leader to be elected, someone who will then become the Premier of New South Wales,” Mr O’Farrell said in a press conference today.

He insisted he did not “wilfully mislead” the watchdog yesterday, but said he accepted the consequences.

He described the missing bottle of wine as a “significant memory fail on my part”.

WOW, pretty shocking came out of now where.

NOTE: NSW Premier is probably the second highest elected office, in charge of the largest and richest state, with a large degree of constitutional independence

NSW generates about 38% of Oz's GNP...
AND it has the headquarters for about 70% of big companies, ahead of Melbourne (which still hosts the boardrooms of the biggest local corporations, like the banks, BHP and Rio Tinto..).

AND it has the single biggest coal-exporting port in the world ~ though we will likely be losing that title to Gladstone in Queensland sometime in the next decade..

ONLY two economies in the nearby "S.E. Asian" region are bigger than our state's (the term "South East Asia" excludes the powerhouse economies of China, India and Japan..) ~ Korea and Indonesia.
And the total Australian economy is still a bit bigger than Indonesia in outright $$$ terms (nearly $1.5 billion vs. around $1 billion; ( many online comparisons are now using "Price Parity" comparisons to deliberately distort rankings..)).

Sometimes Korea is bigger, sometimes it's slightly smaller ~ depending on such things as exchange rates, domestic politics, recent weather and commodity prices..

STILL, it should be noted that the actual reason that Big Bazza resigned wasn't because of the undeclared bottle of wine ~ but because he had lied to ICAC over the previous day or two...

GOES against his very own "set of parliamentary standards" that he had placed on the party a couple of years back..

well it was surprising to see a politician actually live by the standards they set, bit of a shame that guy who set up the corruption inquiry gets done buy it. Considering that there was no evidence that the gift actually preceded any corruption, but he should have declared it all the same, and i sort of believe that he did honestly forget.

I don't like Bazza and his 'toe cutting' boyz, just personally...

They have always been notably lazy politicians ~ made plenty of promises but delivered little over the last three years;
Continued the same line as previous governments from both sides ~ spending nearly 90% of the state's development and infrastructure budgets in Sydney; even though more than 45% of the population, and over 67% of economic production; resides outside of the Sydney Basin;

Bazza' and his clique are all "Economic Rationalists" ~ big on privatisation, reduced spending, and big tax cuts for the top 1% ~ all paid for by the lower 50% of the population..

AND he has also had that bad habit of standing by those corrupt goons like Hazzard and Hartcher all the way until they crashed out. scratch

he was better than public perception, I work in Public education and the cuts were surprisingly at the top end, coal face employees basically got left alone it was superfluous managers that got the boot.

not saying he is great but just good for a politician Rolling Eyes

so only 37.1% of the state lives outside of Sydney and a lot of people from Wollongong commute to Sydney for work and the 'Gong is the third highest population centre representing about 4% of the states population.

Did you know Port Mac was the 10th largest population centre in NSW, with about 1% of the population of Sydney?

LAST time I saw Lake Macquarie ranked as a local government area, it was #4 , (200,000+ people = probably more than four times bigger than Port Macquarie (a further couple of hundred klicks up the coast..)?); while Newie was 5th or 6th with it's 150,000+ people...

COMBINED populations for the 5 councils comprising the 'Lower Hunter' region (add in Port Stephens, Maitland and Cessnock..) is fast approaching half a million, while adding in the rural councils from the "Upper Hunter" takes us over 600,000..

That's more than either the Central Coast (Sydney's primary northern 'overflow' commuter suburbs..) and illawarra combined; or somewhere like Parramatta. Smile

More extremist "economic rationalists",
Less women,
More old failed 'WASPs' among their ranks,
No Aboriginal member,
Less regional representation,
Rewarded previous failures and "Yes men".

THE horror, the horror of it all..
AS the state government swings even more towards the Abbott-Hockey model... pale
