Indian Elections: 'Women Who Have Sex Outside Marriage Should Be Hanged And Rape Is No Big Deal,' Say Politicians
It seems that politicians in India's largest and most politically important state are currently trying to outdo each other by making the most shocking statement possible on women's rights.
Those at the head of India's Socialist Party (SP) have sparked outrage by claiming women who have sex outside of marriage should be hanged, while men who commit rape should be forgiven their "mistakes".
At an election rally on Thursday, Mulayam Singh Yadav, the head of SP, reportedly said that if he became prime minister he would scrap a recently introduced law that fixed the death penalty for rapists, because it is "unfair."
Yadav claimed men should not face the death penalty as it was not uncommon "for boys to make mistakes".
"Boys will be boys. Following a girl-boy fight, the girl complains she was raped," he apparently said in the city of Moradabad.
Newspapers and websites have slammed Yadav for his comments, which came on a day India was voting in the third phase of the general election.

I am not surprised at all. Alot of tyrannical men think this way,'this day and age' is a falliacy.
The thinking processes of some men are truly frightening but he means every word and so do many men who would agree.

I think equality can be a minefield for men in many ways if you open the door to a lady she may smile and thank you for being a gentleman, she may curse you and ask if i think she is too weak and pathetic to open the door for herself, if i don't open the door they might comment i'm an ignorant git...
confusing times...

Not "tyrannical" men. Republicans!
This is typical conservative thinking in any society. Harsh, and usually xenophobic, it is small minds digging into their little hovels. In one case it might be religious...in another, it is economic. It is the core of racism and sexism...the preoccupation with them, the other. Look at the old conservative criticism on Obama: He's not one of us. Typical of the conservative lot.

The key here is to define yourself, and don't worry about the comments of another. If a woman says: You don't need to hold the door for me just because I am a lady; you say: I'm not doing it because you are a lady, I'm doing it because I'm a gentleman.

I would go so far to say it is human nature to hate 'other,' any other, and we have to be conditioned to be civilised, tolerant of differences and accepting of each other. At out core we are not.
Here, the 'other 'is female and some men do hate women.

No doubt.
There may be an urge of xenophobia in all people. But, the more far-sighted among people see not only the value, but the compassion in reaching out.
But far-sightedness is the antithesis of a conservative. The term "conservative" means literally not to go too far, or in other words, not to reach out. That's why you see, generally, that conservatives are the ones with antagonisms toward blacks, Muslims, hispanics, women...anyone who requires reaching out. Anyone who is different.

You are preaching to the converted here! I find the Conservatives 'values',if they can be so called, quite repulsive and possibly inhuman.
Of course empathy and compassion overcomes the sometime rational fear of difference we all may initially possess.
But not so with the Conservatives. However I fear this is not the place for an anti Tory rant ::cheerlead::

No, no, I"m not preaching to you. I'm making no judgments about any one person.
I am simply saying that you will find xenophobic tendencies more prevalent in conservatives. If anything, I am sticking up for the average person, who at least is willing to tolerate others.
