I think equality can be a minefield for men in many ways if you open the door to a lady she may smile and thank you for being a gentleman, she may curse you and ask if i think she is too weak and pathetic to open the door for herself, if i don't open the door they might comment i'm an ignorant git...

The key here is to define yourself, and don't worry about the comments of another.  If a woman says: You don't need to hold the door for me just because I am a lady; you say: I'm not doing it because you are a lady, I'm doing it because I'm a gentleman.

This is typical conservative thinking in any society.  Harsh, and usually xenophobic, it is small minds digging into their little hovels.  In one case it might be religious...in another, it is economic.  It is the core of racism and sexism...the preoccupation with them, the other.  Look at the old conservative criticism on Obama: He's not one of us.  Typical of the conservative lot.

I would go so far to say it is human nature to hate 'other,' any other, and we have to be conditioned to be civilised,tolerant of differences and accepting of each other. At out core we are not.

Here,the 'other 'is female and some men do hate women.

There may be an urge of xenophobia in all people.  But, the more far-sighted among people see not only the value, but the compassion in reaching out.

But far-sightedness is the antithesis of a conservative.  The term "conservative" means literally not to go too far, or in other words, not to reach out.  That's why you see, generally, that conservatives are the ones with antagonisms toward blacks, Muslims, hispanics, women...anyone who requires reaching out.  Anyone who is different.

You are preaching to the converted here! I find the Conservatives 'values',if they can be so called,quite repulsive and possibly inhuman.

Of course empathy and compassion overcomes the sometime rational fear of difference we all may initially possess.

But not so with the Conservatives. However I fear this is not the place for an anti Tory rant  ::cheerlead::
