70-ton 2-billion year old rock removed because social justice
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A large crane and grounds crew arrived at the University of Wisconsin early Friday morning to move a 70-ton rock that sat near the Observatory Drive scenic overlook.
The rock, formerly known as Chamberlin Rock, was being taken off-campus following an initiative last June by the Wisconsin Black Student Union and Wunk Sheek to remove it because a nickname given to the boulder is a racial slur.
It was referred to as a derogatory name in a Wisconsin State Journal story in the 1920s, at a time when the Ku Klux Klan was active on campus.
In a statement released Thursday, the university explained, “[r]emoving the rock as a monument in a prominent location prevents further harm to our community while preserving the rock’s educational and research value for current and future scholars.”
Chamberlin Rock, which is believed to be over two billion years old, was described by the university as a large pre-Cambrian-era glacial erratic. It was named for Thomas Chamberlin, a geologist who served as university president from 1887 to 1892.
In November, the university’s Campus Planning Committee recommended moving the rock to Chancellor Rebecca Blank, who later signed off on the proposal. It will now be deposited on university-owned land near Lake Kegonsa.

I mean why not simple rename the rock, for fuck sake, what is wrong with the mollycoddled kids of today?
Far right beliefs are inherently abhorrent, but far leftist beliefs are as deranged

Re: 70-ton 2-billion year old rock removed because social justice
They don't even need to rename it. They could re-dedicate it to Union General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, who led the heroic defense of Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg.
Chamberlain was an American college professor from Maine who volunteered during the American Civil War to join the Union Army. He became a highly respected and decorated Union officer, reaching the rank of brigadier general (and brevet major general). He is best known for his gallantry at the Battle of Gettysburg, for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
On July 2, during the Battle of Gettysburg, Chamberlain's regiment occupied the extreme left of the Union lines at Little Round Top. Chamberlain's men withstood repeated assaults from the 15th Regiment Alabama Infantry and finally drove the Confederates away with a downhill bayonet charge of their own.
He was given the high honor of commanding the Union troops at the surrender ceremony for the infantry of Robert E. Lee's Army at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

The lunatics have definitely taken over the asylum. It's a rock for goodness sake, what next reduce a few mountains to rubble, fill in a few gorges due to dubious connections.

The issue is not apparently with the name Chamberlin Rock, but with a nickname the rock acquired, which I'd bet money is "Nigger Rock."
Re: 70-ton 2-billion year old rock removed because social justice
Actually just did a bit more digging and the nickname is "Niggerhead," which is the name of several places around the world to this day and was once used as a brand name. There was a seafood company in Mississippi that only changed the name of its "Nigger Head Oysters" in the 1950s.

And the name of BBQ place on S. Cooper right next to UTA.
The building is still there and I eat there once a week. It's now called Beruit Cafe, and is owned by Muslims from Jordon.
They didn't tear the building down, because some black dude thought he had a catchy name in 1972.

Let me preface my comment by saying that removing the rock is, IMO, a dumb decision.
However, when far leftist beliefs result in moving rocks (or even statues), and far right beliefs result in persecution and repression of minority, I do not think they are ‘just as’ deranged. Not even close.

It’s just students enjoying their new found freedom in the world of academe and desperate to start getting their rocks off. Just leave’ em alone and they’ll grow up…eventually.

There is a cut of beef, a small, triangular cut from the sirloin, called the "Tri-tip steak", that is very popular in stores and restaurants. Actually, it was originally called "Niggertoe".
I wonder. Should we remove beef from restaurant menus and butcher shops because of it's original name?

Exactly, I'm so tired of the false equivalency. We don't see the far left of today going around shooting and executing people over their beliefs.
