Why Cancel culture is wrong
This is well worth a listen and shows up why mob rule and cancel culture will always get out of hand.

Re: Why Cancel culture is wrong
First I’ve heard of the “Cancel Culture”....so basically a bunch of hand-wringing weasels who want their own way.
I can see this culture becoming bigger going by what I’ve seen in public, namely, mummies and their precious not-to-be-offended little darling children.

Re: Why Cancel culture is wrong
The thing that bothers me the most about cancel culture is that it teaches intolerance and that people aren't to be forgiven, or at least accepted.
I'm all for voicing your opinion, strongly, when you disagree with someone. But don't try to convince everyone to ignore them, fire them, never hire them again, etc. just because of one or a few things they said.

This is what PC has done to the simpletons of the world and unfortunately, there’s a lot of them!
And it’s only going to get worse.

Agreed and why I think mob rule, which is what cancel culture is. Fails to deal punishment proportionately
It gets way out of hand
As in the video stated, even more so when we have criminal laws, that we now have a system that is more inline with religious eternal punishment
Where do we draw the line?
It seems social media has created a monster in humans, to enact out punishment that makes people become a social pariah
Either we back sound laws that have proportional judgment or we descend back to mob rule via social media
The later is not a viable option

Re: Why Cancel culture is wrong
Unfortunately, social media has its down side. It attracts the stupid who like to jump on the bandwagon and join causes that are “popular”. Also, many people don’t like to stand alone so it’s easier to join the mob and mindlessly whinge and be offended.
I’ve always said it: it starts with raising children right.

What it tells me is that a lot -- an awful lot -- of people aren't as evolved as I'd like to think.
From those who embrace authoritarians to those who do this cancel culture b.s., the modern-day version of ostracism, it's disheartening how little people seem to think past what makes them feel good in the moment.

Spot on Ben
We are not progressing but society is acting as in the past with mob rule

Re: Why Cancel culture is wrong
I blame social media for a lot of things. Multiple studies are finding strong links between heavy social media use and an increased risk for depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts. It's also a conduit for the susceptible, particularly teenagers, to cook up mass hysteria and promotes herd mentality.
At the rate we're going, all it will take is someone to come along, some autocrat with the balls to say what the silent majority are thinking and we'll end up with Hitler Mark 2.

You've only got to flick through Netflix or Amazon movies to see that almost every single teen show/movie is laced with the most ghastly violence.

Sounds exactly like Republicans to me. As Mitch McDonnell, Republican leader of the Senate from Kentucky, said: "I want America to fail whenever a Democrat is in office." Party over country. That kinda says it all...

Re: Why Cancel culture is wrong
The leaderships of such UK organisations as The National Trust, English Heritage and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution are all, in some way, “cancel culture” devotees. Our history is systematically “cancelled” because of supposed historical associations with colonialism and slavery or because of a host of perceived “isms” and “phobias.”
The National Trust leadership (unelected, of course) has recently traduced some of the families who donated historic properties and artefacts into their care and custodianship on the grounds of such often centuries old associations, and even tried to force its voluntary workers and guides into wearing Gay Pride symbols. English Heritage bigwigs ( also unelected) are doing much the same sort of thing.
Some barking mad woman appointed to a senior position in RNLI management distinguished herself by sacking two lifeboat crewmen both unpaid volunteers prepared to risk their lives - because someone told her that they had tea mugs with pictures of bikini clad women on them in their crew room!
In the past I have paid quite large sums in subscriptions and donations to all three organisations. I have cancelled my direct debits to all three.
