Lord Owen welcomes Ed Miliband's Labour reforms - and reveals he has donated £7,500 to the party Lord-Owen-3197892

Support: Lord Owen

Lord Owen took a step towards rejoining Labour yesterday by welcoming Ed Miliband's reforms.

The former Foreign Secretary also revealed he had donated £7,500 to party funds.

He sensationally quit Labour in 1981 – along with Shirley Williams, Bill Rodgers and Roy Jenkins.

The "Gang of Four" formed the breakaway Social Democratic Party.

Lord Owen said he wanted to support Labour, but had stopped short of becoming a card-carrying member because he valued his independence in the House of Lords where he will now sit as an independent Social Democrat.

He said in a statement: "This is a brave and bold reform by Ed Miliband.

"I and many others are hoping to see the party produce a plan for Government next year to rescue our NHS.

"Saving the NHS is my main political priority."

Mr Miliband said: "Lord Owen's support today is welcome.

"In our many conversations over the past few years, I have come to value his friendship and insight into politics."

Lord Owen quit as SDP leader in 1987 over the merger with the Liberal Party.

These reforms are not as radical as they are being portrayed. The delay in the implementation means the unions will still have their grip on Millibands balls for years to come. It is smoke and mirrors to try and deflect critici8sm of the unions running the country.

There will; be much more about this in the press no doubt.

Catman talks often about the RW scum but when it comes to devious spin doctoring disingenuous Paedo sympathising parties you can't beat Labour.
