99 year old war veteran hoped to raise £1000 for the NHS...
What a briliant story.
WWII heero Captain Tom Moore initially set out to raise £1,000 by walking 100 lengths of his 27-yard garden in Bedfordshire - but he has now smashed his target by 7,000 times in less than a week.
He has now raised more than £7million for the 'brave nurses and doctors' of the NHS by marching around his garden on a zimmer frame.

I like the way he sports the traditional three-button blue blazer. Polished brass buttons and Medals...muted tie, subdued color behind the ribbons and crest.
He's a man of excellent tastes.

Great man!
Is it still socialized medicine if it requires some charitable contributions to function properly?

Far more so than your current crop of idiots can come up with
and
this money is going to provide things that no system could ever be expected to have ready, basically R&R for nhs staff, and what could be described as pastoral care for them and their families..things that, save for a 1 in 100 year happening, are never normally needed at a level that's being seen now....

The point is simple. Our system is inferior because it's not completely funded by the government and sometimes relies upon the generosity of donors. A system that doesnt require that is far superior.
Or so we get told.

It's the old RW saw that charity is a substitute for socialized healthcare.
In truth, there is no equivalency whatsoever. It's like comparing a ham sandwich to a 12-course feast. Charity is always too little, too late.

depends what its for quill....
this is for the things that make the NHS staffers lives better and a bit more bearable under whatever strain they are facing, not something you can have sat in place "just in case"
thats why over here we have "benevolent funds for our fire fighters police etc.....
and why we have charitable collections to provide "a bit extra" to many other hero's of society.....
our core services dont depend on "charity"...
again being in the states YMMV

Yeah. I don't think anyone proposes to do away with charity. It's just not an appropriate substitute for government supported healthcare.
I'm sure if anyone suggested that the military be funded by charity, s/he would be laughed out of the room. Does healthcare face any less of an enemy? The point is all the more poignant during the present Covid crisis.

A truly inspirational man who, ironically, lives only half a dozen miles from my own home.
It was absolutely great to see him pass the finishing line to a salute in front of an honour guard of soldiers from his old regiment, The Yorkshires.

Captain Tom Moore has collaborated with singer Michael Ball with their own uplifting version of You'll Never Walk Alone for charity.
Since starting his fundraising efforts by walking 100 times around his garden, which he completed on Thursday, Captain Tom has raised over £21m for the NHS.
Having inspired a nation, Ball has joined the Captain Tom to perform the uplifting You'll Never Walk Alone with the attention of raising even more money.
The NHS Voices of Care Choir have also joined the song, which was instigated after Ball spoke to Captain Tom on BBC Breakfast and was recorded within 24 hours.
Captain Tom has spoken the words, with Ball providing the lead vocals.
Ball hopes the single will reach No 1 in time for for Captain Tom's 100th birthday on April 30th. "

Okay, who the HELL gave edds and Maddog red for that? It was just a joke, and a funny joke at that.
They weren't bashing this inspirational man, and anyone who thinks they were has seriously lost the plot.

It was ME...and i dont care...it wasnt bashing but it WAS disrespectful
AND I have zero humor about this current situation....
as I am trained (in my earlier working life) as a medical microbiologist and which studies included epidemiology i'm going to stick my neck out and make a prediction, and its one that should make you shit yourself....
given the profile (as best we have it) of the victims of covid, and given its a corona virus (and thus any hopes of immunity are tennuous at best (think how immune you become to a cold...you dont....)
by the time this virus has done running several waves through the world it will kill in the very high millions if not billions and WILL reduce global trade to next to zero. It will also take out 90% of experienced skilled people (who of course tend to be older .......it will also rampage around for 20-50 years.....
UNLESS a suitable drug candidate can be found.......
OR
we can sufficiently "isolate" to make it burn out
to do that would mean NO international travel (at least certainly not for holidays) and possibly even restrictions on goods entering/leaving countries....
Any country getting "clean" would need to defend its borders like mad, and practice the greatest care in ANY outside contact......

WHO now warns that immunity may not be a thing that you can rely on
so that leaves hoping for a suitable drug....
otherwise the ONLY way out is to starve it of victims...which means continued lockdown......
