Say something nice about someone from the "other" party
I said we should have a thread like this in an earlier post, so I'll start us off:
As a Democrat, I have a lot of animosity for the Republican Party, so my compliments are all geared toward Republicans:
* Beth Rickley, a Republican operative from Louisiana, was almost solely responsible for exposing the racist views and background of David Duke, a former leader in the KKK who has run for many political offices (including president).
* George W. Bush did a lot of bad things, but he did create protections on the Aleutian Islands from being stripped for oil and gas, and I just genuinely think his heart is in the right place, even if his head isn't always.
* Reagan practically eliminated the phenomenon of acid rain.
I'm sure there are more, but I'll leave it there for now.

Re: Say something nice about someone from the "other" party
thing is its not individuals
I'm philosophically opposed to the current leftist agenda and the influence of "cultural marxism" which infests it.
in all its shapes and forms
it has NOTHING to offer me, offers the threat of taking off me what little (relatively speaking) I have,
has repeatedly, since the blair /brown days shown itself incompetant and weak,
and is increasingly strident, anti democratic (prosecuting opposition MP's etc) out of touch (the voting base is stupid..from MP's AND grass roots members)
etc etc etc..... an ideology out of control and rightly consigned to the nether regions of opposition, Hopefully for a VERY long time....

no one "not of the left" will have much to say about the opposition or its members since as I say, for the moment and until Starmer can work his magic that we have been promised the whole party is tainted

Re: Say something nice about someone from the "other" party
So am I to take it that neither of you think that any Labour figure has ever done anything good for the country?
Re: Say something nice about someone from the "other" party
Well I don’t have a “side” thankfully....
So I can safely say, most people from each side are probably pretty decent but often have to toe the line or get greedy, misled or sidetracked from their initial intentions.
Or perhaps I’m a hippy trippy idiot.

Re: Say something nice about someone from the "other" party
The lefty members on here...even the more rabid ones (you know who they are ) I think genuinely have their hearts in the right place and hell, on some things I even agree with them (indeed I'd go further in some cases vis I'd make the right to shelter or a home a human right) (even though i cant get the concept of a human right ..but thats an entirely philosophical point)
BUT they come with too much excess and interfering baggage.........too many intrusions into MY life too many demands for others rights that cross up my rights and or which they expect ME to pay for....
and these things are of sufficient irritation to turn me against their whole philosophy........

I think it's really sad when people can see no good in those they disagree with. One of the things I liked so much about eddie from the very beginning, when she first joined here, is that she can't make things into some false black-and-white scenario.

OK so lets start with a concrete example
that day the murders happened on london bridge a murderer (and he WAS a callous murderer) saved several lives at considerable risk to his own.....does that deserve recognition ?
and therefor ...how?
do we suddenly think, "well actually he aint such a bad old stick at that "
or do we wonder if he did it with one eye on potential benefit it might bring him?

Pretty sure they're both against "overseas adventures" (aka wars) as well, but I would ask you this -- do they take those positions for the same reason?
Re: Say something nice about someone from the "other" party
I have been a lifelong Labour supporter, pre Corbyn and have never voted Tory in my life, but I think they, led by Boris, have really stepped up to the plate since the coronovirus crisis.
I really cant see how any other party could have handled this better....so hats off to them, and thank goodness Boris is making good recovery.

Not really.
Ron is like me and has a MYOB philosophy.
Bernie thinks he's saving someone or being virtuous.

Ron is against government spending, which leads him to the position that he doesn't want to pay for wars or weed policing.
Bernie thinks the government should help people be happy, so don't send them off to die or tell them they can't have a bit of weed.
I know I trust someone like Bernie a lot more than someone like Ron -- because Bernie comes to his views out of idealism, where Ron comes to his views out of being stingy.

Part of it's being stingy. Debt is a bad thing for people and governments.
Part of it's the problems caused by drug enforcement and policing the world.
It gets a lot of innocent people killed.

a bit off topic but still
those who use cocaine and its derivatives (and possibly many others), and yes I talking about the USERS...should be prosecuted with tghe same ferocity and subject to the same penalties as those who download child abuse material.....
the logic behind this being the child abuse that is an inherent part of cocaine production....

Vic, seriously? Using cocaine etc should be seen as bad as child porn? What planet are you living on?
How is that even the same thing?? You lost me.

Re: Say something nice about someone from the "other" party
why do we prosecute child porn so assidiously (and rightly so ??)
because of the harm it does to the victims who are in those picyures/films...yes?????
go look at the child abuse involved in cocaine production........

What has that got to do with the occasional users? It’s a stupid leap imo.

Cocaine is derived from a plant. It shouldn't be any more abusive to children than production of whiskey, also derived from plants.

I think Vic has made a big leap, in my opinion. Its like saying people who smoke a lot of weed make for bigger unemployment figures because they’re too lazy to work. It’s just like linking sausages to giraffes.
Or something.

Why are kids used for the harvesting of this crop, and production of it's final product, and not others?

Ok I’ll play.
I admire Margaret Thatcher and Teresa May. Not for their policies per say as much as how much bullshit they put up with from men in Parliament and the political world.

And if it was legal, bandits would be replaced by the same people that grow corn, and we would have the same labor practices.
It's the illegality that causes the problems, not the product. It's just a fucking plant.

I admire the various conservative politicians who put their principles ahead of party politics. The Right is very good at playing the game of politics and toeing the lines (true in both the US and UK), so when some, often to their own their own disadvantage, stand by their principles, I have nothing but admiration.
To name names: Oliver Letwin, Dominic Grieve, Anna Soubry, Ken Clarke, Mitt Romney and John McCain.
I disagree with all of them on almost everything, but good on them for sticking it to their party's excesses.

Though he's occasionally made an ass of himself, I don't mind Mike Huckabee in general. I've seen a lot from him and he seems like a true gentleman.
