It appears when in times of crisis, and when essential services are needed, society turns to socialism to provide dependable protections.

New York Governor Cuomo made this point on national TV just yesterday: the reason we don't nave enough hospital beds, masks and ventilators, etc., is that capitalism only produces what it can sell, and profit off of in the immediate. It doesn't prepare beyond the market, and lord knows Republicans/Tories won't do anything from which they can't take a profit. Inventory is waste.

That's why dependable services must be performed by socialist means. The market has other priorities.

To the extent that it is anticipated. That's why the Department of Health exists, even though it doesn't make a profit. It's solely of the people, by the people, for the people, and paid for by the people.

Yes he should set a good example and follow instructions.
However I have a feeling he knows deep down that as a fit, slim, active healthy 70 yo, he has better lungs and far better general health than, say, a 50 yo lifelong smoker. Or a 50 yo with diabetes.  Etc ….. Hence his rebellious attitude.

It's actually quite brutal and arbitrary for the govt to use age alone as the only deciding factor here  - and take nothing else into account, but I guess the gov't has to keep instructions as simple as poss, so that the masses can easily understand what they're being told.

Brilliant point and I have often see you say this, and indeed it's being demonstrated right in front of our eyes.

It's all very well that conservative politicians, when campaigning for votes, drone on and on about the merits of  private enterprise,  individualism, blah blah, ...….... but when push comes to shove and there is an unprecedented national crisis they suddenly fall back on good old fashioned socialism to keep the wheels of society moving.

A conservative education minister was praising teachers, social workers and NHS workers to the hilt today and acknowledging the pivotal role they're playing in this crisis, and pleading with them to do continue to do their bit to help.

When the economy is booming socialism is rubbished and all the wealth is channelled into the hands of the few, not the many.  But when times are hard and the economy is on the verge of collapse, suddenly socialism seems the solution after all and a cry goes out to the socialist professionals to help.

Teachers, social workers and nhs grassroots workers are traditionally looked down upon as a bunch of lefties / socialists /commies ....... so it was satisfying to see that minister almost tearfully begging them to continue to do their bit to keep the country going.
