Private schools criticise plans to get more poor students into university
Regulator’s pledge to boost university access in England ‘may discriminate based on class’
https://www.theguardian.com/education/2020/jan/29/private-schools-criticise-plans-to-get-more-poor-students-into-university
I think this is a great idea.
Leading private schools have challenged plans to widen access to the most selective universities in England, warning they could lead to discrimination against young people “on the basis of the class they were born into”.
The intervention by the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC), which represents many of the country’s most expensive independent schools, reflects members’ concerns that new measures to improve access for the most disadvantaged students could lead to discrimination against students from elite private schools.
The HMC was responding to plans, published on Wednesday by the higher education regulator for England, the Office for Students, that promise to halve the access gap at England’s most selective institutions in the next five years, increasing the number of disadvantaged students by 6,500 each year from 2024-25.
HMC’s executive director, Mike Buchanan, said universities should expand to accommodate as many “truly suitable students” as necessary, rather than “rob some students of a future to award it to others”. He also called on universities to review the increasing number of international students, rather than “deny places to UK students based on their class”.
Since the lifting of the student admissions cap in 2015, the number of places at many universities has grown exponentially, but undergraduate numbers have remained relatively stable at Oxford and Cambridge, though both claim to have made significant progress in diversifying their student body.

I think he means the white working class males, and he's right in my opinion. Just like in America, white working class males don't have access to much in the way of programs to boost their lives, possibly because they're not widely seen as a disadvantaged group (even though they largely are).

90% right. My point is when a society over compensate an erro on how they have treated some people in society. Its inevitable, another group will suffer. Just as we are seeing today with white working class children
Hence the issue is to eradicate labels.
help those that need support and not play off identity politics
As this is continually dividing us all

Elite schools complaining about ''discrimination'' ? - they have no idea how ironic that sounds.
I guess it's only natural for them to feel outraged at anything which threatens the class privilege that they put so much effort into preserving.
Why oh why do common plebs keep getting ideas above their station & upsetting the poor lil darlings?

1. How much is overcompensation? Can you even calibrate it? Let's say, 240-years of slavery. Two years of college? Three years of college?
2. Why is it, in your perception, a zero-sum game? Why must another group suffer? If we were talking about gold bars, or diamond rings, limited resources might mean short supplies. But there is room, particularly in education, for many, many more.
All it takes is a little more money. If Britain can afford more prisons surely they can afford more schools.

I agree with Dodge... British university places should be open for the brightest and best British students first and foremost, regardless of which school they went to... If they pass the entrance exams then they get in...

One thing that comes to mind is: entrance exams could be more racially and ethnically neutral in order to determine the 'brightest and best'. For example, try writing the exam in Ebonics, and for equality sake, make sure that all students take the same test.
Other examples abound, but the point is to avoid artificially skewing acceptance in favor of white culture.

So you rig the competition, eh? It's nice to know you don't play fair. I'll take that into account when dealing with Brits* in the future.

Re: Private schools criticise plans to get more poor students into university
So...
Those greedy elititist fuckers in Britain's establishment private schools don't want any more of those uppity lower "class" and minority group peasants sullying 'their' hallowed universities..
Not good enough for the snobs "English 'Public' school" pervert brigade that they already have their boys Boris and Nige up there in positions of influence in guvm'nt.
If those private/elitist school headmasters had their way, no doubt they would prefer to see the hoi poloi back out in the fields and factories on half wages, and their children back down in the mines..
Conveniently forgetting who actually pays to maintain the universities and colleges -- it's certainly no longer only the aristocracy footing the bills, like it was 400 or 500 years ago...

Grammar schools are the best way to give the brightest working class students the opportunity to get into the top universities...!
