Almost a dozen people were shot early Sunday morning in New Orleans, police said.

Eleven people were injured when shots rang out in the famed French Quarter around 3:20 a.m. Sunday, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Ten of the victims were taken to area hospitals, including two in critical condition. The 11th victim walked in to a local hospital, officials said.

None of the victims have been publicly identified.

Police are still investigating to determine a suspect and motive, the NOPD said in a statement.

One person has been detained, but is not a suspect in the shooting yet, police said.

NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson told reporters that there was already increased police presence in the area, specifically Canal Street, for the annual Bayou Classic football game between the Grambling State Tigers and the Southern Jaguars.

“We had officers on that very block that actually thought that they were being fired upon and took a position to respond to this,” he said at a press conference. “Unfortunately, there were so many people out here, we were unable to determine who was actually firing shots at the time.”

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Ferguson said police are currently looking at security footage in the area as part of the NOPD investigation,
