Trump says he'll help Senators who oppose his impeachment with their campaign funding
President Donald Trump is rewarding senators who have his back on impeachment — and sending a message to those who don't to get on board.
Trump is tapping his vast fundraising network for a handful of loyal senators facing tough reelection bids in 2020. Each of them has signed onto a Republican-backed resolution condemning the inquiry as “unprecedented and undemocratic.”
Conspicuously absent from the group is Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a politically vulnerable Republican who’s refused to support the resolution and avoided taking a stance on impeachment. With his new push, Trump is exerting leverage over a group he badly needs in his corner with an impeachment trial likely coming soon to the Senate — but that also needs him.
Republican senators on the ballot next year are lagging in fundraising, stoking uncertainty about the GOP’s hold on the chamber, and could use the fundraising might of the president. Trump’s political operation has raked in over $300 million this year.
On Wednesday, the Trump reelection campaign sent a fundraising appeal to its massive email list urging donors to provide a contribution that would be divided between the president and Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner, Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, and North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis. Each of the senators are supporting the anti-impeachment resolution despite being endangered in 2020.
“If we don’t post strong fundraising numbers,” the message warned, “we won't be able to defend the President from this baseless Impeachment WITCH HUNT.”

Just when you think this asshole has hit a new low, he proves you wrong. If this behavior isn't already illegal, it definitely should be.

Of course. It's jury tampering. It might also be obstruction of justice, and conspiracy against the United States.
In impeachment proceedings, the House only brings charges...like a grand jury, a bill of impeachment is an indictment. The Senate then tries the individual on the indictment, with the 100 senators sitting as jurors. Trump is trying to bribe jurors with campaign money.
But alas, the current Justice Department, under AG Wm. Barr, maintains that a sitting president cannot be tried or convicted...even if the charge were murder. Only after a conviction of impeachment can a president be charged and convicted in a criminal matter. We'll see what they do with this.

This is impeachment, not legislation. There is something wrong when someone in the role of the accused, if not the defendant, is able to go outside the procedures and offer bribes for jurors' votes.

Why are you making excuses (the fucking weak-ass "the other side does it too," even though this is a totally novel situation) for something I know you know is wrong?
Why do people always do this for Trump?

I'm not making excuses. I'm claiming your fauxrage is silly.
You keep acting like one side is worse than the other. They are not.

And there is nothing unique about this. The DNC uses money as a carrot or a stick too.
They fucked Bernie over last election, because he doesn't always "stay on the reservation".

Ah, the joys of the two party system where independent thinkers are faced with having their campaign funding withheld.
Fixed it for you.

That is exactly what he is doing. It's illegal to buy a juror's vote. Hell, it's illegal to by anyone's general vote.
This is impeachment, not everyday legislation. There is no comparison when one has a personal stake in the outcome. At a minimum, this should go down as another count of abuse of power in the Bill of Impeachment.

Whilst I agree with your sentiment, the story is actually about Trump, so why not comment on that?

Re: Trump says he'll help Senators who oppose his impeachment with their campaign funding
Because nobody who likes Trump even one iota can bring themselves to actually condemn him as a person, they just have to make what-about-Clinton excuses for Trump. It fucking baffles me. I will never understand how people look at Donald Trump and feel any inclination to treat him better than anybody else.
