If the labour govt from 1997 to 2010 hadn't completely ruined the UK economy and public finances through sheer mismanagement and incompetence... then the incoming tory/lib dem coalition govt wouldn't have had to reorganise public spending to sort the public finances out!!!

Governments of all persuasions are always responsible for deaths, by wars, cut backs, bad economic decisions extravagance, licensing drugs or whatever.

When Labour were ousted, they left a message , "sorry the moneys all gone". They didn't mention they left us a pile of debt ! Andy didn't mention it either !

The incoming tory/lib dem govt in 2010 inherited labour govt borrowing catastrophe of 170billion and rising, literally spiralling out of control!!!

1.Main points

General government gross debt was £1,821.3 billion at the end of the financial year ending March 2019, equivalent to 85.2% of gross domestic product (GDP) and 25.2 percentage points above the reference value of 60% set out in the Protocol on the Excessive Deficit Procedure.

General government gross debt first exceeded the 60% Maastricht reference value at the end of the financial year ending March 2010, when it was 69.6% of GDP.

General government deficit (or net borrowing) was £25.5 billion in the financial year ending March 2019, equivalent to 1.2% of GDP and 1.8 percentage points below the reference value of 3.0% set out in the Protocol on the Excessive Deficit Procedure.

This is the third consecutive financial year in which general government deficit has been below the 3.0% Maastricht reference value.



So the shit started with the labour govts complete catastrophic mismanagement of the UK finances... borrowing 170 billion a year by 2010 and rising year on year thereafter with their disastrous spending commitments...


The incoming tory/lib dem govt were faced with a herculean task of reigning in the disasterous eye watering levels overspending and borrowing by labour...


Of course this meant that there would be reductions in spending... even the labour party agreed that cuts were necessary... but the labour opposition party then opposed every reduction in spending that was put forward...!!!

In Britain, the USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand,  overall long term 'Gross National Debt' levels have always increased the most under 'conservative' government policies..

Without any real world exceptions --  and despite the revisionist claptrap we have often seen on here from the likes of Tommy, nicko, Dodge, Fred, Deano, smelly', Victor & co. over the years

Not only debt, but what other trouble can governments get into?  Tory/Republicans win out there, as well.

Here in the US, a president is elected for a maximum of 8-years.  Seems, inevitably, we Democrats are always spending the first four years cleaning up Republican poop, and only have the remainder of our time to actually carry out our own plans.

Being in govt means that sometimes you will inevitably be responsible for deaths of your own citizens (and of people living in other countries too). It's a question of keeping those deaths to a minimum.

Conflicting interests are always at play - the leader's task is to resolve these fairly and justly. That takes moral rectitude, good ethics and nous. Selfish egos compound the problem.

I remember when NZ elected Jacinda Ardern as prime minister. A very young modern progressive lady.

She said the hardest thing for her in her new role as PM is having to deal with constant feelings of guilt. Because, as a leader, every decision you make has a strong nationwide or global impact on peoples' lives, and you have the unenviable task of deciding who gets the best end & who gets the arse end of a deal, each time you make one.


Eg if you start mining for gold, or drilling for oil in a river, you disrupt its natural flow and people in another country hundreds of miles downstream could suddenly find their river (their life blood!!!!) has dried up.

Yes... after inheriting labour's legacy of spiraling debt and economic doom...

Tory had to cut spending to try to bring this back in line to prevent the bankruptcy of our country!!!


And labour opposed every single cut... so if labour had been in govt still, this debt would be far far higher and we would be in economic ruin...!
