Trump's Florida Mar-a-Lago resort in Hurricane Dorian's path
Trump's Florida Mar-a-Lago resort in Hurricane Dorian's path
President Donald Trump's prized Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida is potentially sitting directly in the path of Hurricane Dorian , which is forecast to become an extremely destructive storm.
The resort, which is currently closed for the summer, is on the wealthy barrier island of Palm Beach. During the cooler months, Trump visits the property frequently and has held several high-level meetings there with world leaders.
The National Hurricane Center's most recent track for Dorian places Mar-a-Lago in the crosshairs of a possible Category 4 storm with winds of almost 140 mph (225 kph).
Still, the resort dates from the 1920s and has seen more than its share of hurricanes in the past. It was originally built by cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, with the main mansion containing 126 rooms.
Trump bought the place in 1985, after efforts to make it into a national park did not work out. Since he became president, Trump has hosted leaders such as Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and China's Xi Jinping at the resort.
Hurricanes have always been a part of Mar-a-Lago.
In 2005, Trump said he received a $17 million insurance payment for hurricane damage to the resort. But an Associated Press investigation found little evidence of such large-scale damage.
At the time, Trump said he didn't know how much had been spent on repairs, but acknowledged he pocketed some of the money. He transferred funds into his personal accounts, saying that under the terms of his policy "you didn't have to reinvest it."
"Landscaping, roofing, walls, painting, leaks, artwork in the — you know, the great tapestries, tiles, Spanish tiles, the beach, the erosion," he said of the storm damage. "It's still not what it was."
Trump is a climate change skeptic. Meanwhile, local governments across Florida, including in Palm Beach County, are gearing up to deal with rising sea levels and possibly more intense hurricanes. If sea-level rise predictions even at the lower end come true, Mar-a-Lago could have ocean water lapping on its lawns in the not-too-distant future.

It might not be very Christian-raised-but-now-atheist-but-still-liking-Jesus of me to say, but I'd love to see it destroyed as well, so long as nobody's hurt. It's only property, after all, and it's not like he can't live without it.

It's kind of a historic building. It's about 100 years old. Someone else will own it someday. And besides, he would probably make money off of the insurance claim.

Trump is your typical "dumbass" gambler property developer...
Building their glitzy, overpriced and overvalued junkheap resorts, casinos and golf courses -- understaffed with minimum wage (and often imported) 'coolies', while alienating the local residents and crippling the local economies -- in hurricane/cyclone alleys, or on 'shifting sands' beaches, or on steep slopes overlooking skifields, or on 'third world' tropical islands..
And then gambling that the inevitable natural disasters (or the next major economic downturn, or military coup..) will hang off long enough for them to recoup their investments.

You've got it all wrong, nicko. Yes, we hate Trump. He is a traitor, cozy with this country's enemies. He sells his office for money. He cages children, mocks the disabled, sends back children here on emergency medical grounds, opposes gun laws and thereby champions the slaughter of our children in schools, pisses on our heroes, soldiers and generals, but lauds enemies like Robert E. Lee, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jung Un, most of all, he sides with white nationalists and motorcycle gang members and wants to "make America white again".
He is the prototypical evil, selfish, and bigoted person...yet you like him. Doesn't that cause you to look inward a bit? I don't want to conclude that you embrace his values; I'd rather think you are just misinformed, maybe too far away to keep up.

I understand. But the issue is more complex.
Trump, in his enthusiasm to deport immigrants, misses an important point. There are not one, but two laws involved. One, it illegal to immigrate without following procedures. But, two, and more importantly, it is illegal for employers to employ such individuals without verification of their status. It is this latter law that aims to halt the displacement of American citizens from employment positions...so it is by far the more important law.
Trump chooses to enforce the anti-immigrant law, but ignores the law mandating the employer not hire immigrants. Why? Because he, himself, breaks that law and hires mostly illegal immigrants for his hotels and properties.
If he were so genuinely concerned about the workers, even before any hurricane tragedy, he would strive to make a better life for immigrants among the workers. And you...before I can believe you are genuinely concerned about the 'poor' employees, I would like to see you express some sentiment for their much greater problem...that of Trump withholding their legal immigrant status.
I realize you don't have any role in American issues, but anyone can have an opinion.

Because, frankly, you support everything he does. Not much difference between the man and his policies.
I dislike Trump because of his policies. You apparently support his policies, but for some reason disavow the man. That vexes me, yes, but it's more disturbing that you champion his policies. It's his policies and behavior that causes us to dislike the man.
I'm curious, and could turn the question around: why do you dislike him, when he stands for everything you approve?

Like forcing Mexico to pay for the wall? Like imposing tariffs on imports, and insisting the exporter will pay for it? Like rejecting so many pacts, and now wondering why we have so few friends around the globe?
The best thing that can be said about Trump is that he is stupid. The worst...that he is a traitor and a vermin to his country? You saw Helsinki. You saw how he sucked up to Putin and rejected everything his own country was telling him.
Most people grow up believing they might become president and the leader of the greatest, wealthiest nation on earth. Trump grew up believing he might own a hotel in Moscow. Is that not insanity?

Re: Trump's Florida Mar-a-Lago resort in Hurricane Dorian's path
First off, if Trump were to stop paying his employees because of storm damage, that would be a major dick move, not that I'd put it past him.
Secondly, of course I don't really wish any harm to anyone.
And finally, I'm getting a bit sick of this myth that Trump has accomplished so much, or kept his promises. His main promises were to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, and to repeal Obamacare and replace it with something "much, much better."
He's not come close to accomplishing either of those things, and it's highly doubtful he can in the 14 months between now and the next presidential election.

Not completely. Marjorie Merriweather Post built the Palm Beach estate with her husband, American financier Edward F. Hutton, co-founder of E.F. Hutton & Co.

People must be doing some things differenly in Texas...
In many places once somebody actually 'develops' some property, they can be referred to as "property developers"..
Irregardless of what they label themselves on their tax returns.

I guess if you call yourself that. It works like this:
Inquisitive guy: Who developed this property.
Owner: I did.
It's all in what you want to be identified as.

Grow a few tomato plants you're a dilitante; or a lazy gardener...
Grow a few hundred, or thousands, mostly for sale or commercial purposes, then you can call yourself a "tomato farmer"..
Simply labelling oneself a "farmer" doesn't make it so.

So you say. I say the developer of a development such as Mar-y-Lago is known as "the developer".
Apparently you've been affected by the proliferation of tract homes, and want to limit the term to those who build them.
A definitional, or semantic argument is a waste of time.

Ah well, he has five other residences, all mansions or penthouses, not to mention the White House. Not like he'll be sleeping in a disease-ridden detention center or anything.

I've certainly wished worse for people who've taken one child away from his or her parents, and Trump has done that to nearly 1,000 children.
Have you forgotten the photos of separated children from the Obama era?
Trump has just picked up the pace.
Interesting. Have you got links, photos etc?

Democrats on the House Oversight Committee sent out a pair of tweets Wednesday and earlier this month with photos of migrants sleeping on a detention center floor to publicize an immigration hearing in Capitol Hill.
Just one problem — the pics were snapped in 2014, during the Obama Administration.
The Dems deleted the two messages, and claimed it was an “error.”
