Vigilante group of soldiers and teachers unite to fight crime in their neighbourhood as a lack of police resources means officers are failing to respond to many incidents
An 'angry and frustrated' group of soldiers, teachers and ex-marines have united to fight crime in their neighbourhood because a lack of officers means police are failing to respond to many crimes.
The neighbourhood watch group was set up by an exasperated father after thieves tried to force their way into his home as his pregnant wife slept.
He and fellow vigilante enforcers now patrol the streets of Southampton, Hampshire, in the dark, in a bid to catch criminals in the act and reduce crime in the area.
However, Hampshire Constabulary today warned the group against taking the law into their own hands, telling them the police are the only people specially trained to respond to crimes.
The SO19 Neighbourhood Watch group is now patrolling the Thornhill, Sholing, Weston and Woolston areas of Southampton, starting at around midnight each night and continuing until the early hours of the morning.
Made up of former Royal Navy Marines, serving soldiers, teachers and even pensioners, they pass on information to police about crimes in their area.
After setting up the group less than a week ago, they have already been able to locate and return a bicycle stolen from an autistic child and help police with information about of string of criminal damage offences.
A spokesman for the group, who did not want to be named, said: 'I started alone out of desperation.

DALLAS — A group of men in the Highland Hills area of Dallas are tired of crime in their community — so they're arming themselves.
“We are not here policing or being security guards. We are coming as brothers,” said Marcus X. Russell.
They call themselves community engagement activists.
They have armed themselves and openly carry weapons around an apartment complex near Paul Quinn College in southern Dallas.

If police can’t catch the criminals due to lack of funding or whatever it is, then what the hell is wrong with the public helping out?

The public usually doesn't generally follow the sort of rules and procedures to ensure that people are proven guilty before they're punished. The judge, jury and executioner should be objective, not angry.

Now all we need is a vigilante force that opposes white supremacy and carries guns, and another that opposes blacks and carries guns, and we'll have a genuine war.

The problem with Maddog's example of gun carrying racist rednecks forming their own vigilante gang under the guise of a neighbourhood watch style group ???
It will nearly always be started and organised by the wrong kind of people, and then inevitably attracts the worst kind of dickless unthinking bullies into their ranks (as demonstrated by their 'open carry' posturing..).
And the small unfortunate sad fact that such bullyboy gangs will inevitably end up targetting the wrong targets.

Here’s a great example of why it’s never a great idea, no matter how angry and frustrated civilians might feel, for them to take on a vigilante enforcement group. All it takes is a rumor or trigger happy have a go hero for it to go all wrong.
By all means have a neighborhood watch scheme but report it to the police and then leave it alone. Want more police? Give them more funding. Or train civilians to be special/volunteer police in the proper way.

No you don't, child. You don't even know what it is like.
You think a single shooter is bad? Try 100 of 'em a side, all with AR-15's, all convinced they are 'the second coming'.
