PLEASE read this and sign the petition.
Elephants are such beautiful, intelligent and loyal beasts. Tikiiri hasn't got long left, she needs to be retired so she can spend the time she has left in peace.
It only takes seconds to sign the petition.
Please do it. x
"Broken by neglect, Tikiiri the elephant looks close to death as she lies on the ground surrounded by men unwilling, or unable, to help her.
The harrowing image has increased fears for the welfare of the 70-year-old elephant after we told yesterday how she was forced to walk miles in shackles during religious parades in Sri Lanka.
TV and radio presenter Nicky Campbell has joined the chorus of voices calling for Tikiiri to be properly cared for.
Campbell, 58, who campaigns for animal rights, said: “It is sickening that such cruelty can be inflicted on this beautiful, sentient, sensitive, old lady – in the name of religion.
“After all she’s gone through she should be taken out of her misery, given a chance to live out the rest of her days being properly looked after.
“All her life she will have been thinking of her mother and family and why on earth she ended up in this hell. She needs our help – now.”

Re: PLEASE read this and sign the petition.
Cruelty towards animals can be stopped if enough people care.
Years ago I went for a walk and I saw an elephant shackled in a field....not a usual sight round these parts.
Anyway she was near the fence, and I walked up to her, and the look in her eyes was almost human, she was pleading for help.
Her legs were deformed and tightly chained, her skin was in a terrible mess, looking past the sores on her face and eyes you could see the depth of misery in them.
Apparently she belonged to a travelling circus, and it was obvious she was ill and being illtreated.
That elephant was Anne....and enough people cared to fight for her release and rescue her from the hell she was living.
Just signing a petition, if enough people do it, can make a difference.
Anne now lives her life in peace at Longleat Safari park.
It's not ideal because elephants are sociable family orientated animals and Anne is on her own, but it's better than the hell she was living before.
Sadly, when human beings interfere with wild animals, taking them from their natural habitat just to put them on show for the entertainment of others..... there is seldom a perfect ending.

Re: PLEASE read this and sign the petition.
Ive signed lots of these Syl for various animals. It break my heart to look at them. They deserve to live their lives in peace, not worked to the bone.
I did read somewhere that people from animal rights have been there this elephant was so old, not eating, but I don't know if this is right article tbh.

She is very old and very ill, yet still being dressed up in heavy garb and forced to walk in noisy processions.....it's inhumane.magica wrote:Ive signed lots of these Syl for various animals. It break my heart to look at them. They deserve to live their lives in peace, not worked to the bone.

I've had that same problem with foreign-based petitions before, too...
Syl's link took me too a site where the Oz version is sponsored by the Sydney Cats and Dogs home; so after signing this elephant one, I signed another promoting the microchipping of cats and dogs..
Oh, and shared the link on Facebook.

Re: PLEASE read this and sign the petition.
Brilliant..Wolfie, Cass and Nicko. (I have timed out on a thanks and greens but I will be back)
The latest news I can find is that Tikiiri's owner did respond to the outrage generated internationally, she has now been pulled out of performing in the religious pageants, and though she is still very ill she is back on her feet and being given medication.
Hopefully it wont be too late to save her, but at least she wont be paraded around till she drops down dead with illness and exhaustion, and the publicity and outrage generated will hopefully help other elephants in future.
It's thanks to ordinary people who took the time to just sign a petition. Over 27,000 have now signed.
Thank you x

Cass I am the same, stories like this play on the mind, it's hard to stop worrying about vulnerable animals, and people of course, when we know how much they are suffering.
But though we may feel helpless, it does show that if enough people care sometimes something can be don to help. x
