First ever A-level where getting almost half of answers wrong will get you an A
Students who got almost half of the answers wrong in their Maths A-level this summer will get a grade A, it has emerged.
Just 55 per cent is required for an A in this year's Edexcel exam, according to a leaked copy of the grade boundaries seen by The Telegraph. It is believed to be the lowest amount of marks ever needed to secure a top grade in a Maths A-level.
Students with 45 per cent will be awarded a B, those with 34 per cent will get a C and those with 14 per cent will pass their A-level with a grade E.

It's all in the numbers. What does the bell-curve say?

Re: First ever A-level where getting almost half of answers wrong will get you an A
I was going to start a thread about this...
It is even more damning evidence of the complete dumbing down of our education system!!!
I posted some time ago about this... it was about a report where a group of A level students who were due to sit their A level exam in maths, were given some old O level maths papers to see how they got on... and they all failed miserably...!!!
And there has previously been reports about how university graduates have regularly turned up at graduate level jobs, unable to read/write and do basic arithmetic properly... and how employers have had to give remedial classes to these university graduates in english and maths!!!
WTF is going on with it all!!!???

I would say it demands a huge investment of more money into the education system, wouldn't you? If you want teachers who think like you do, hire more stock brokers...tho they don't come cheap.
Spend money on teachers, curricula, facilities and food. Make sure the homeless students have a place to sleep. Do these and thousands of other things, and things will get better.

Put two and two together, tommy. You don't like deterioration in national education, but you say I'm a twat for suggesting ways to improve it. Contradiction or just plain old hypocrisy?

Never know an education system that takes a third of the answers and getting two thirds wrong as a pass grade C. What a fucked up eductaion system we now have
No wonder people are coming in droves to study here when its that easy to obtain qualifications. The Uk education system is being put out to shame by other countries that have far toughter grade system for students. Soon are qualfication system will become the joke of the world

They can't fix anything. There is no fixing a math equation. If they are grading on the bell curve, it is what it is. You can't substitute your judgement for the answer.
Tommy is substituting his judgement for the results of math:

I think you're wrong there, toms. Have you heard of 'austerity'? You are just seeing the results of austerity. We all knew it was coming. Y'all could have voted for the other guy, but you didn't.
Meh...it's what y'all wanted.

I really don't know what Quill's burbling on about, but this is about creating more "A" grades. No wonder we hear about all these"straight A" pupils. It used to be quite hard to get an "A". You had to be original as well as knowing your stuff and revising hard.
If employers go on school grades, they will merely start to demand straight "A"s and not look at anyone with a "B".

Nobody's making anything up. If you've got a room full of dumb people, and you grade on a bell curve, you're going to have an 'A' level comprised of dumb people. Pure math.
Looks like the UK has a room full of dumb people.

Re: First ever A-level where getting almost half of answers wrong will get you an A
i remember O levels and A levels grading
damn sure you had to get at least 60%+ to qualify as a C grade
70%-80% would be a B
above that would be an A
also back in the day you had +/-grades
A+
A
A-
B+
B
B-
etc

crappy teachers, a crappy curriculum, lack of facilities and hungry students doesn't bode well for a good sound education and preparation for the big wide world does it

Tommy was talking about university graduates though. Presumably, they got the grades at school otherwise they wouldn't have got to university.

If they are all dumb as a stone, the best among them gets an 'A'. You can't mess with the math.

They are completely fixing who is able to pass and gain grades that are simple not equivilent to cuntries that excell in education
Your defense of this is not only poor its not even based on a bell curve
It even more makes less sense being as the tests are not based on the previous performances in class
You simple are making up once again a load of horseshit
They simple have lowered the score rates in order for more people to pass, when in reality many should not pass.

When these students go on to uni or out into the big world they will be competing internationally with students who did earn their good marks....how will they fare then?
It's a form of cheating in a way.

Wonderful. Let Trump fix it up the way he is fixing trade relations with China.
I'll bet we'll be having this conversation ten years from now.
