Russia seeks to remove baby boy from parents after they took him to opposition rally
Authorities in Russia are seeking to take a baby into care after his parents brought the one-year-old boy to an unsanctioned opposition rally in Moscow.
Prosecutors said on Tuesday night that a petition was filed with a Moscow court to strip Dmitry Prozakov and his wife of their parental rights for putting their child’s life in danger at a July 27 rally, when some 1,300 were detained.
Over the last two weeks thousands of people have taken to the streets in Moscow in support of opposition candidates barred from participating in the upcoming city’s elections.
The initial police crackdown was followed by continuing arrests of activists. Officials said that the couple abused their parental rights and exploited the child during the rally where they handed him over to a third person.
But critics said the case appears to be a new intimidation tactic against the opposition. Moscow prosecutors said in their statement that they were also looking into other cases of people who attended the two most recent banned rallies with small children or encouraged minors to participate.
