Am I Normal?

Everyone is unique, but what is considered ‘normal’ when it comes to penis size, shape and colour? Sexologist, Gabrielle Morrisey, answers five of the most commonly asked penis questions.

What’s the average penis like?

There are only two types of penises: ‘grow-ers’ and ‘show-ers’. Grow-ers are those men with short flaccid penises. As their penises become erect, the shaft grows much longer. The difference between their penis size soft and hard can be several inches. Show-ers are those whose penises tend to hang long, even when flaccid. When their penises go from soft to hard, their length may hardly change. The penis simply fills with blood and becomes stiff, rather than longer. So you can’t judge penis size based on the soft/flaccid state of it. As far as the size of the erect penis, the general range for “average” is thought to be between 5-6 inches (12.7cm-15.2cm), but research results vary so this range is a guideline only. Average circumference (girth) of an erect penis is between 4-5 inches (10cm-12.5cm), again research results vary. Average flaccid size is 3.6 inches (9.16cm). Current research shows that only 2.28% of men have an abnormally small penis, but interestingly, only 2.28% of men have an abnormally large penis too. The majority of men are average, like over 90% of all men regardless of ethnicity.

What do girls think about penis size?

Girls don’t spend nearly the amount of time or attention thinking about penis size as guys do. Girls are far more concerned with other relationship issues, and being treated well outside the bedroom, as well as in it. If she feels satisfied, pleasured, respected, cared for, desired and adored then she really doesn’t care about the size of her partners penis. Contrary to some men’s fears, girls don’t really discuss the size of men’s penises very much at all.

What if I have a bend in my penis?

A penis with a bend is very common. The penis, contrary to popular myth is not a ‘bone’ or a muscle. It is the erectile tissue (made of collagen fibres) that fills with blood to get harder, can take on variation in whether it bends to the left, or right, or angles upwards or straight out. Age can also determine the angle of erection too.

What does a normal penis look like?

“Normal” in the real world is a range. There is no magic number, shape or size. Just as everyone has a unique face, everyone’s genitalia is unique too – and that goes for men and woman alike. No one looks the same, or has the identical shape and size. The opening at the tip of the penis, the urethra, can also vary in size and location. Skin colour isn’t always uniform across a penis, and there can be varying shades of colour on the shaft and head of the penis. Some penises can have protruding veins, while others not at all. Men can be circumcised, or uncircumcised, pierced or unpierced. Some men even get decorative penile tattoos. Every penis is wonderfully different!

How can I get around a small penis size?

The size or shape of your penis isn’t the most important factor in pleasuring a female partner. The vagina is a ‘potential space’. This means it stretches to accommodate what is placed inside it (or comes out of it – like a baby). It will snugly wrap around whatever size you are. What guys fail to understand is that it’s the motion of intercourse that stimulates her physically, not the size of your penis. Also, when a female is close to orgasm her vagina will contract, making it squeeze down on the penis inside it. At this point it really doesn’t matter what size you are.

He's kept the fact hidden from her, and that's not fair.   Imagine sleeping with a man and you can't feel anything?   It's that small, there's barely any penetration?     It's all very well saying Oh, love means all.  That's fine and dandy  if you know beforehand and then go ahead.  But she didn't.  

Joking aside, I actually feel really sorry for the man in question, but I do think you can have surgery for this these days.   But  a good satisfying sex life when you're young is essential.  If things are wrong in the bedroom at that age, it probably  doesn't bode well for the relationship.

Does size matter?  I'm afraid it does depend on whether you get an average 6 inches or an all acorn and no shaft one.  You can get away with a bit of technique and confidence in bed with a small one, but a micro penis is neither use nor ornament, I'm afraid.

Most women would choose a reasonably sized todge.   If they say they're not bothered, they're either lying or have never played hunt the sausage.
