NASA will attempt to knock asteroid off orbit in attempt to defend Earth against possible impacts
The idea is to use a high-velocity missile impact to slightly alter the trajectory of an asteroid:

This comes as yet another asteroid has been detected on a trajectory that will bring it (somewhat) close to Earth:

"DART would be NASA's first mission to demonstrate what's known as the kinetic impactor technique — striking the asteroid to shift its orbit — to defend against a potential future asteroid impact," Lindley Johnson, planetary defense officer at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said in a statement.

The asteroid, dubbed by NASA Asteroid 2019 AH13, is expected to make a so-called “Earth Close Approach”. NASA scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory estimated the asteroid will swing by around 4.22pm GMT (UTC). During the daring flyby, the rogue asteroid will reach breakneck speeds of more than 5,368mph (2.4km per second). The NASA revelation comes just 10 days after the JPL first observed the asteroid on January 13 this year.

Hope they do the maths right, otherwise next time it comes around it might actually hit us instead of a near fly by.
