Fred, the experience of losing someone close is devastating. But grief and sorrow are not the only odors that attach to nazism. A lot can be learned, analytically, about the politics, psychology, economics, etc., of authoritarianism. Books such as Alan Bullock, Hitler: A Study in Tyranny; Donna Hersch, German Social Democracy and the Rise of Nazism; Conan Fischer, The Rise of National Socialism and the Working Classes in Weimar Germany; Eugene Davidson, The Making of Adolf Hitler: The Birth and Rise of Nazism...are written to advise of us of another possible coming of the same chemistry, however remote it seems. It's best to remain vigilant.

As history gains distance from the original experience, some in our midst tend to recreate the conditions that brought about the original. Maybe it's human nature. The clothes are up-to-date, but the attitude and conduct are the same old shit. What do you think Charlottesville was? It deserves a passing comment.

True enough, but having someone aim a 250 kilogram bomb at you or denying you the simple pleasure of eating a banana did tend to concentrate the mind wonderfully.

And I did, of course, learn a lot more about the true nature of Nazi and Fascist philosophy (and practices), even though I was a few years older at the time.
